Re: drained of a spirit of endeavour 400 years ago?

I really do hope she takes it as a momentary hiccup, and that she goes on win in top level running, as she is a superb athlete. Time will tell what effect these events have had on her, and I wish her only the very best.

Unless you've ever run long distance, I cannot even begin to explain to you. She took the decision whilst under a barrage of criticism of her marathon run, and .........I can take some several leaps of intuition, but none of them would mean anything to a non competitive long distance runner, and you've already shown you don't understand the underlying principles

"and you've already shown you don't understand the underlying principles "

You are implying you know more than her or her training team. Given the circumstances of her failing to complete the marathon, don't you think they (Paula and her team of coaches, physio's, doctors, Nutritionists, Masseurs, psychiatrists and the rest) would have looked long and hard as to whether she was fit enough to run the 10,000? They either thought she was fit in body and mind or they were ignorant and aloof with regards to the performance of the other runners.

Maybe they were all arrogant enough to think "well dear old Paula is not 100% but she can still do well"?

No way would she have run just to appease the press and her fans at home.
I imagine that at her level, if you are not 100% you know you are not in with a chance.
IMHO she was not good enough physically on the day(s) which led to her being in unfamiliar territory (not being the best) and loosing heart and the will to win.

Maybe next time?

It's not the team that make the decision to run or not.

Enough of this, we are never going to agree.

I wish I'd never started this!

In an inspired bit of Fred drift, I think the attitudes differ thus;

The British think Endeavour was winning and deserved to win the auld mug, and the Americans cheated, stole the win, and clearly had no respect for themselves, the Americas Cup, or Endeavour.

cheers,
David
