Possibly designed for inland waterways, ie. canals and rivers. It does look suitably narrow.?
 
Canal / River barge .... similar to what you see on the Rhine / Eurpoort Canal ...

Some get seconded into bunker barge work ..... technically she should not be offshore as her Classification would not allow her ...
 
Looking at her she's either part loaded or with significant ballast .... she is not 'empty' as the article says.

Problem with such a vessel if she was with max ballast to make the sea journey, one she is not designed for - is that the midships bulkheads were most likely under severe sheer stress. Any seas and she could snap as shown. But that's only assuming.
 
6 or so weeks at sea? Be interesting to know more.

Not clear but could have been working the anchorage?
That was my first thought. And which particular bit of forbidden geography got the cargo? And what cargo? I know she's a tanker, but you could find room for a decent quantity of drugs or arms.

OK, I'm no expert, but she does look more like something I've seen on rivers, designed to go under bridges, than anything I've passed in the Channel, so there had to be a worthwhile reason, more lucrative than honest transport of petroleum products
 
Gib and across the waters at Alecieras and Ceuta are key bunkering positions. Often saw over the years a lot of coasters with the folding forrard mast and bridge that lowered to deck level. River craft in other words. But passage making through the Straits. No idea where but frequently enough to be unremarkable.

Perhaps the Pro's on here who have sailed on 'coasters' will know more?
 
i sailed on a delivery trip to greece from southampton on a flat bottomed bunkering tanker that had spent its life in the solent -----looked very like the picture but slightly smaller ----went straight across biscay----- disconcerting in a 5 foot sea on the nose to watch the deck rippling and and the rust popping off------even more disconcerting ---we had no safety gear whatsoever on board----all safety gear had been hired from a well known portsmouth scrapyard------board of trade inspected the boat at 9 oc---safety gear removed at 11oc--- we sailed at 1oc------was suspicious the skippers papers might not have been genuine----but thats another story
