Britain's America's Cup challenge

I really do wish Ben well, he brought the Americans back from the dead, but what worries me is that he will have a problem either raising enough money to build a boat or enough to build one to be competitive with the higher budget boat(s). Good luck to him that he does.

Newey? ...... Ainslie's after sponsorship.

Red Bull has already been mentioned. And have commitment to the enemy as well https://www.facebook.com/RBYAC

If this is true, and given that Newey is to remain focused on F1 for the remainder of 2014, this means the British Challenge's Head of Aero will have started work 5 months late, in a design field (yachts) he is previously unfamiliar with.

Newey is without doubt a genius at F1 aero, but I'm not completely convinced as to how transferable the knowledge is;
I understand that Newey is seriously into yachting and for a man like him, that means he understands all the concepts.
Plus he has a design capability that puts him head and shoulders above others. That is a totally transferable skill.

So far he has a starting budget of £80mill. Interesting that a few F1 key people are venturing into yacht racing, Mike Gascoyne being another. Maybe Red Bull will sponsor a yacht racing team like Caterham has (Caterham Composites, Caterham Challenge, Tony Fernandes).

Can someone explain to me why there is local opposition to Ben basing the challenge on a brownfield site in Portsmouth?

No idea, it will be great for Portsmouth and what a location! I believe the planing permission has been approved by pcc. There was a scheduled meeting the other day for local residence with Ben but it was apparently canceled due to to many people turning up!!

Red Bull is Austrian, not Australian. That said, if the Swiss can succeed in the AC then I suppose the Austrians could put up a team!

How do we know that red bull are sponsors. Find it hard to believe that a Australian company would sponsor a a uk Challenger?
We don't; and Red Bull is an Austrian company with links to Malaysia (for where the energy drink that tastes like the floor of a dentists consulting rooms originates from). Last time out they were a partner of Team Oracle.

Trying not to get too excited here, but look at it on paper...

-Ben Ainslie, arguably the world's greatest short course sailor ever and a guy who had a colossal impact on OTUSA last year
-Adrian Newey, supreme aerodynamicist with an F1 chip on his shoulder (tbc)
-Dirk Kramer, lead designer of OTUSA on the last cup, has now jumped to BAR. They also made incredible gains in boatspeed last time (even if some of it was a bit dubious)
-And the design/shoreside list goes on...

Jimmy Spithill will be quietly crapping himself...let's be honest he's a damned good yotter but Angry Ben will totally own him psychologically. And I really think that BAR will be doing this one for Bart too...I don't think you will find a more driven team. And I bet Iain Percy is wishing he was a part of it too...

Let's just hope that this drive, experience, and good old British technical know-how can beat Larry's cash and his stupid, pathetic rules...

If you look at the link in my post #21 you will see that red Bull are already involved in a AC programme in the US.
That's not to say they won't back a UK challenge.

Camber Dock is not your average ' brown field site' - surrounded by jolly expensive modern flats ( where I expect the complaints come from ) and Old Portsmouth, one of the few bits which didn't get bombed flat ( and rebuilt in 1960's concrete ) with much older 3 storey places overlooking Portsmouth entrance, well know habitat of retired Admirals; Nelson joined Victory before setting off for Trafalgar there.

When the modern apartments were first built they were way over-priced and remained empty, then when prices were chopped and people did move in they insisted the local fishermen move out of the tiny marina destined for home owners...

The dock itself is still moderately busy fishing wise but could certainly accomodate Ben Ainslie's project; I understand the main thing locals object to is the size of the proposed building.

Also parking is already a nightmare there inc quite possibly for residents; it was for me when I lived nearby.

I must say having the Red Bull guy on board gives a whole different perspective in my view, we might even be competetive...

It could be he spends the free time he doesn't spend racing cars on other people's yachts, but I've never seen any mention, in any of the profiles written about him, that he owns a yacht of his own or goes sailing. Could be I'm missing something (could well be), but he's been considerably less forthcoming about his 'passion' than other F1 luminaries (Patrick Head, Eddie Jordan, Mike Gascoyne).

I trust the next AC will be cat's then ?

I did see a thing a while ago saying they'd revert to monohulls, but for this circus cat's seem the way to go to get any interest from Joe Public.

The last and possibly only AC contender I saw personally was Lionheart, a typical British Leyland style plucky attempt against the big boys...

Let's hope this time it will be different and British lawyers might find themselves doing something good for once in their lives - ' have you had an accident at work ? - call me back later after the America's Cup ' !

Spot on that man, come on Ben!

Seajet...yes, 62' foilers with less crew this time. I was dead against the 72s last time to start with, but there is no doubt it produced some of the most amazing sailing I have ever seen.

When you bear in mind that at the beginning of the actual racing event, not the development programme, they'd gone from low riding upwind at 20 knots and foiling downwind at 30, to foiling upwind at 30 knots and foiling downwind at 40 at the end, who knows what the performance will be this time round. I guarantee they will be much faster than the 72s, and hopefully better matched. Just look at the Moth...smallest, lightest boat in the dinghy park but also the fastest by far...and all the development work to go faster centres on foils, rig, aeros and foiling stability. Size isn't everything, especially when you are flying!

Exciting stuff.

Iain C,

I saw two foiler Moths yesterday in Chichester Harbour; I wasn't just impressed by the by now usual speed, it was when each capsized and was under way again in less than 30 seconds !

Clearly one doesn't have to just be good, but very fit too; I still fancy the Int Canoe a lot of foiler Moth sailers migrated from, but I'm now not fast or fit enough for that either; miss seeing them around though.

Charles Dunstone is Chairman and shareholder too. Not only a serious yotty racer but must have a few bob to spare after the Carphone Warehouse/Currys merger!

Foiling cats, and I believe they will be able to have real foils not weird shaped "daggerboards" that just happened (what a surprise) to be able to act as foils. Foils were AFAIK banned last time!

The bit that worried me for Ben etc was that I read that the challengers were only allowed to build one full AC boat each, whilst the defenders were allowed two. Everyone knows the way to go fast is to have two boats and incrementally tune/tweak/modify them against each other, so the odds are stacked heavily against all challengers if that is true.
