In 2015/16 we're setting sail on a circumnavigation and thought it might be a good idea to bring out boat round from Dartmouth to Bristol where we currently have a house. We'd rent the house and spend a year on the boat getting used to living aboard before leaving.

Does anyone here live aboard in Bristol and can advise? I assume there is a long waiting list to get a harbour mooring and unsure if the Marina allows liveaboards? Any advise on things like wifi, water, parking etc appreciated.

Thanks!

go see bristol marina and anywhere along the floating harbour its packed with liveaboards - not even sure half of the floating homes are classified as boats ??- theres a waiting list for the floating harbour - but the marina will usually make space

Boats covered in bikes, flower pots, a roof full of junk

I thought that's what you were implying, (no offence intended) probably on boats that couldn't sail anywhere even if they tried - prefer to call them gypsies with a boat myself, giving proper liveaboards as found here, a bad name

There are a few options in Bristol harbour to moor up and the harbour office is the first place to ask. I think you will need to get a small boat safety ticket to stay there for more than a month, this came about to stop the stream of river boat coming into the city when the scheme was started on the river. There are places to tie up with no services which are often vacant but places with electric and water are harder to find and parking is very difficult.

How about slightly further out at Portishead?- and it has a large Waitrose supermarket right next door for your free daily coffee...

Watchet looks to have vacancies and tolerates liveaboards if you could stand the longer run in to Bristol.

Needs to be in Bristol I'm afraid. Spoke to the Marina and Harbour. Very little space for a 43 footer but their rates, conditions and facilities seem good.

I migrate to Bristol Marina from Milford every couple of years for winter to allow for more local maintenance. It's a nice community a mixture of salty & canal/river boats, the staff are friendly & the boatyard obliging. There's always something going on in the floating harbour & The Orchard is a great old fashioned pub. I like it a lot but am forced to admit that descriptively SteveSarabande has it banged to rights.
