Bringing an Evinrude 2HP back to life.

I'm trying to revive an Evinrude 2 HP Model Number E2RCiB.

Had a little trawl on google to find some info... no help at all.

Does anyone know the following.

what fuel mix 50:1?

how to remove the cawl. (looks to me like the whole thing could fall apart on doing this)

Leg oil. I can see the filler at the bottom but where's it going to over flow from?

Should i change the impellor as a matter of course or see how the water pumps?

Depends on how old it is really, the cowls usually came off after removing the flat head screws around the sides.
As its getting on a bit i would tend to run it with a bit more oil so 50:1 is ok.
i couldnt fine the exit for the oil in the gearbox either so i just drained out the old and then dribbled the new in.
As for the impeller i would just see if its ok as it is.if you start taking it apart you will open a can of worms.

I believe it to be 1981. So some may not class it as old.
(Myself I am a 1964 model and refuse to be called anything other than young.)

There's a big screw in the centre top of the cawl which i thought would be it but this seems to hold what i would describe as the fly wheel assemble.

Further inspection shows several bolts going up from underneath that may or may not hold the cawl... but they also seem to hold all sorts of other bits and I fear a pile of parts on the shed floor.

Your approach with the leg oil sounds good. Did you turn it upside down or horizontal to refill it?

Finally My own opinion on the impellor was to suck it and see. I have to say i ended up paying peanuts for it and it is only to pop on the back of my inflatable.

From the cowling point of view i would take screws out and pull gently as you go peeking to find out what your undoing.
the oil i did upside down at an angle.or you could get a small tube and put it on the bottle of oil with some duct tape and try it that way ?

There were a couple of UK based sites for repair of older outboards listed.

The one hole in the gearbox / skeg is a fill / level hole so after you fill it stand the engine upright and allow the excess oil to drain out. Overfilling is not recommended.

I bought it pretty cheap, I'll keep your comment in mind for if there's a next time.

She's ruinning!!

Got the cawling off.... 4 bolts underneath.

Had to clean up the recoil mech which was gummed up with large amounts of dried fuel/grease.

Then had to track down the fact that the carb was gummed up and apply large quantity of carb cleaner. But now she's running.

Rich and lean controls will take a while to get used to.

tell tales producing a fine but steady mist.

I might just leave it at that for now.

There's always good and bad ..... I was told the Merc 7.5 Sailpower O/bd was a pile of manure and best left on the shelf ..... bought a s/hand one years ago and it was the best engine I ever had........ only complaint I had was when an ignition coil went on one cylinder - it knocked out the other as well and you couldn't run on one cylinder as get-home. But it was a VERY good engine ....

Personally engines are often cross border jobs being produced by very few factory's for various brand names ..... so go for it and many happy tender rides with it ....

NEVER turn a o/bd upside down

unless it is absolutely dry of any water in the passages / leg etc. and even then its NOT a good idea as oil in the leg goes to places it should not .....
