Brilliant idea?

But most won't carry out OCR functions if the pages have just been scanned as images, which is the case for most of the things people are interested in here. The one you link to doesn't, for example. And OCR is a tedious process - it is one of those things where the computer gets it more than 90% right - but you still have to carefully proof read and correct it because of those few percent it gets wrong!
Let me rephrase that for you - "But most cheap or free software won't carry out OCR functions if the pages have just been scanned as images," :D the majority of the full blown commercial packages do very nicely and even flag "suspect" words so you can manually correct if needed.

Easily downloadable from the Web - no need for emails or RNLI donations.

What I'm hoping is that someone can convert this into a format that works well on the Kindle.

Yep, and I managed to get the file size down from 66 meg to 14 meg in the process - thanks for the link to the file :D - looks like a Haynes type manual though and ruddy awful scanning - took a while to clean it up.

Cliff has done a good job, the file is fully searchable including the labels on the diagrams. It works well on the Kindle in landscape mode and you can magnify the diagrams.

PM me your email address if you want a copy. I'll batch up requests to save multiple uploads.

If you feel like making a donation to the RNLI send it direct to them.

Is this sent to the kindle via the converter, or keeping it as PDF?

I tried sending the original PDF to Amazon for conversion. As it was just images it didn't do much good, just changed it to Landscape. With the searchable file I transferred it by USB cable.

Re; passing on the cd' you got from third party...

No problems with doing that as you are not breaching copyright by introducing additional copies, or using a infringing copy for business...

However producing a version on PDF, and then distributing copies of the PDF
, converted into other formats or why... Is a primary infringement as you are introducIng additional copies of the work into circulation.

Given that the manual can be downloaded free from the Barrus website - in image pdf format - I can't imagine they would be worried about passing it on. Do you?

No, I doubt they will.... But you did ask!

I guess we have to ask how much they value the goodwill engendered by the free facility they have on the site, after all they also have moral rights under the legislation...

Interesting that I have learnt this pm a ex emplyee of mine has just shelled out a substantial sum for lifting some piccies off a website and sending them to the mail and the guardian who then published... Guardian have done a apply in the paper and a offer of settlement but only after they
Were served by the court.....

The original author of the work put them online on his website for all to see, but took exception when he lost control...

I doubt Barras will have a issue though, I have worked with them and found them to be very good!

Don't you have a man to service the Yanmar? Surely he should be the one carrying the manual.

Nope, that man is me.

Hence when things like the back of the gearbox falling out happen, I can be back in action later the following day, instead of waiting for the local Yanmar dealer who was booked up all week.
