It was busy in Harwich Harbour yesterday, a great sailing day.

Brilliance of the Sea departed and was in contact on CH71 with HHA

Same class as the sister ship below

Approaching Languard the engines went in astern as a yacht sailed across its bows, Brilliance gave three short blasts on its horn.

The master called HHA to give the name of the yacht, HHA repeatedly called it on 71 without success so dispatched a pilot boat to the yacht to get it to call 71. I was surprised given that the maneouver was 'brave' at best that HHA said " you carried out a dangerous manouever under the bows of the ship, you embarrassed the master and pilot, in the same situation next time wait at the Guard Buoy until the ship has passed. Please also ensure you are listening to 71 in HHA area"

Two mins later HHA called back said yacht on 71 - no answer.

I won't name the offending yacht but got me to thinking what are the penalties that can be imposed for this sort of behavior?

Were you surprised that he reprimanded the yacht or surprised that his reprimand wasn't more forceful?

My understanding is that overheard VHF transmissions should under no circumstances by passed on to a third party.

As indicated it is not form to name and shame and have not; I was specific about that for some that clearly did not read the post carefully  In any case there could have been extenuating circumstances, I am not casting the first stone just interested in what the 'form' is for this sort of thing whatever the craft.

VTS were very polite and hopefully that is an end of the matter, but my question was borne out of interest of what are the bylaws etc out of interest not aimed at the crew of the yacht.

It was a question not a judgement

So long as there is no attempt to name and shame, as none of us could be aware of the full circumstances, then we're into a colregs debate. Haven't had one of those here before but we're probably talking about vessel being restricted in manouverability (sp) and the old favourite argument of the nutjobs who demand power give way to sail, so probably best not go down that route either :hororr:

HHA are very keen to grab any opportunity to criticise yachtsmen; in their ideal world we probably wouldn't be allowed to share the water with shipping. In the past, I've had a pilot boat approach me, waving and shouting, when I was crossing the channel near Harwich and a cruise ship had just left Parkstone - there was loads and loads of time for me to get out of the channel, but they insisted on making an issue of it.

Coming in on Saturday, we kept 10m outside each red, behind us the mooooooooohasive Ivan container ship something or other, no horns, and we were scrupulously but only just outside the channel. Along comes the HHA boat and I swear did three very tight turns around us then kept itself between us and the Ivan something. Very aggressive behaviour.
