Hi all, we are planning a cruise in company to Brightlingsea over the late may Bank Holiday. I have the dubious task of finding a place for us to eat on the Saturday night.

Sadly the Kovalam is not a runner as we have to cater for more "basic" tastes.

There will be about 20 of us in all, so not enough to get the yacht club excited!

Do our esteemed panel have any suggestions, of a nice pub that would suffice and look after us.

Late May Bank Holiday?
There should be plenty of room everywhere - everybody else will be in Ostend /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's the slowest Fish and Chip shop I have ever been in. It was very busy with a queue out the door but they just took each order as it came and cooked it - no cooking ahead. My wife (on the boat) thought I'd gone to the pub instead (as if). So if that was a serious proposal give them notice.

Good F&C though.

We once had a reasonable Sunday lunch at The Rosebud (01206 304571). Food quality adequate, plenty of it and good value. However I have no idea what it would be like on a Saturday evening. It's on Hurst Green; walk up into the town, turn right along the High Street and its about 300 yards. About 10 minutes walk from the waterside.
I would welcome information on whether we were just lucky, if it is best avoided at certain times/days or is just unknown as its a bit out of the town centre.

The Fish & Chip shop near the Hard is hopelessly slow. Much better (quality and speed) is Winkies which is near the High Street end of New Street - has a very nice sit-down restaurant too.

There hasn't been a Chinese restaurant in B'sea for years, though there are a couple of takeaways (quality somewhat indifferent).

Can't think of anywhere if Kovalam is out and YC won't help. Pretty poor show from the YC and I thought they wanted to try and improve their image for catering! Mind you it has been 2 or 3 years since I have had taken my Sailing Association there - and it used to be a regular in the programme!

Have you tried phoning HM - Bernie? He or his team may be able to think of somewhere else! 01206 302200

Last time we tried the chippie he rudely refused to serve us for a sit-down meal...at 7pm. We even offered to pick the plates up from the counter - nope. Never been in there since.

Hi Nick,we have always found the Cherry tree very welcoming. On road out so a bit of a walk, best to ring first with that number though and I can't remember food serving times

VERY surprised that the Yacht Club cannot help! Suggest if you haven't already done so to speak to the Commodore, Sue Last. Sue is very proactive in promoting the Club, and I think she would be interested to hear of any problems with booking. Contact Sue either by phone on 01206 302594 or e-mail waterside @ colneyachtclub.org.uk

Had a lovely meal last time I overnighted in Brightlingsea in a small restaurant down a small street off the high street - no idea of the address or the name so not really much help. Very small; if you went with twenty you would swamp the place. Somebody local might know where I mean. Good seafood and from memory unlicensed but BYO. Not in a good location, is it still there?

The Railway Tavern brews its own beer and I believe another one further up as well. No food - not even crisps, but curious.

I have finally got hold of the Colne YC (as they didn't return my call) to be told that it would have to go to comittee to decide if we could eat there on the saturday night! We are a group of 10-20 peeps!

Is this normal? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Yes for there, we used to have an annual association dinner there so when I wrote to pay the bill and thank the Commodore for allowing us to use the club, I would ask for the following year's date and normally get a reply a couple of months later, presumably after the next committee meeting.

Haven't been there for a couple of years as they were without a chef for a while and now I try and vary where we go a bit more than my predecessor did.

Also being my home port it meant I didn't get a weekend away!
