Bresser Night Vision Scope 5 x 50 £99 LIDL from Thursday...

Doesn't seem to get good reviews mind you for the sake of a ''C'' note I might be tempted though I usually use a spotlight when sailing at night if I need to look around - so much nicer when one can actually see what one is about to hit:D

I'm testing some FLIR (infra-red) night sight equipment for Defra on Thursday. It is supposed to take still pics and video. I'll post some results as soon as we have run the tests and the people who are paying have their report :) The kit is supposed to have a range of up to 800m for an object the size of a human head.

In case anyone's interested...

I got one a few years back. It is amazing, even in total darkness the IR light illuminates the nearby area (say 10mtrs) extremely well. With some ambient light (which is most often the situation) even distance visibility is good. You have to accept that everything is eerily green which reduces clarity & there are some edge distortion issues with the lenses. But at 100 squid it is a cheap first generation night scope.

Issues to remember; using it will completely destroy your night vision in that eye for a minute or two, the comparative brightness is startling. TBH I have found it a fun toy, but don't take it to the boat & haven't actually used it in anger. Still good fun at night in an unlit rural area such as where I live.

Where it says in the instructions not to use it where there is bright light, it means it. We found out the hard way, scope destroyed.

That's useful information - I'm thinking of getting one of them if I can get to a Lidl before they sell out. I've read some pretty good reviews - you have to be realistic for the price, but they are reported to be useful.

Night sight in the daytime

They should have a lens cap with a pin hole so you can test the sight in daylight but I also thought that all modern sights were built with an overload prevention circuit that switched off the delicate bits before they can be damaged.
I have not checked the spec for the Bresser model but if it fails in bright light, you may have to be careful not to let a car headlight or bright spot light to be shone on the sight at night.

You probably don't need to rush, they are usually around for a week or two. The usual Lidl customers don't generally spend £100 on toys like that.

I had one that was a few hundred but sold it.After using military ones they don't seem very good.OK for fun but not much use on the boat.To be honest the infared cctv has a much better image.

Worth asking yourself if you really need it - the one time these things really don't work is when it's pitch black, they do need some light to amplify. In most cases, normally adapted night vision is just as useful, without the gadget; and the money is certainly better spent on a decent pair of binoculars.

2nd that or/and a really good spotlight.

The Lidl's around my way, clear their stock when the next 'special offer' starts, its not left until it sells. However, Aldi do just that.
