Wifey bought me one of these for Christmas, unfortunately it does not work at all. I suppose I could get a refund but if these are quite good maybe better to wait for a replacement, if that is offered. So are they any good?

I bought one and it's quite good actually.

Quite a narrow field of view but on the water this is probably a good thing.

It illuminated my trees in my garden despite it being pitch black.

I have yet to use it in anger but have no doubt it will work well. They aren't as sharp as traditional binoculars but this misses the point as they will be ( in my case) used for identifying objects at night.

Outdated, and overtaken by later more advanced systems. Consider thermal imaging as opposed to image intensification.

Does thermal imaging show up cold items such as mooring buoys and how is it against bright lights? My first generation image intensifier is useless against brightly lit distant background, it gets blinded by the lights but works well in just moonlit areas.

TI kit works on object A having a different temp from object B. So will work in complete darkness. And you can swap the colours round. Generally water is warmer than a buoy and this enables the TI to show a pretty pic at much higher resolution than Image intensifiers which rely on some light being available.

I use the TI kit to identify certain illegal activities on the moor. Against bright car headlights you can still see hot tyres and an engine compartment.

If you are buying in a shop they should be able to demo, but FLIR have a number of good videos

Scout TK Pocket-Sized Thermal Vision Monocular | FLIR Systems.

I'm sure Flir is much better, but for a basic unit the £80 I paid for is a bargain.

The flir unit you provided the link for is closer to £600...

Its an Infra red one. Have a look at the video below which reviews it. Cheap as chips and I have no doubt not sophisticated but I can see objects clearly at around 100 metres in pitch black.

I inherited one of these with my boat 3 years ago. Never used it in anger although had it out a couple of times at anchor. Earlier this year tried to use it semi seriously and couldn't get it to work at all. Following day I found it was much more effective with the lens cap off!
I don't think I would buy one but since it's here it will stay in case of need. It is quite effective - with the lens cap off ofcourse
