Hi all. My tamarisk 29 has a grp hull, attached to this are iroko rubbing strakes that are painted with international (primer, undercoat, toplac). On top of the rubbing strakes are varnished rail caps.
Water is making its way in to the rubbing strakes and is then unable to get out so it gets wetter and wetter until an area of paint flakes off. They're not rotting except in small isolated spots. I have tried improving the seal between the rail caps and the rubbing strakes with sikaflex and epoxy but am unconvinced that this will entirely solve the problem, unless I entirely remove and replace the rail caps.
I'm wondering if there is any mileage in painting the rubbing strakes with a breathable paint such as jotun demidekk, so that any moisture that gets in can make its way back out again? Anyone have experience using breathable paint on a boat?
