Breathable Oilies - Waterproof ?

your response was "Definitely wash em, but IMHO some of this advice sounds similar to that I saw used with a hot hair dryer to dry out ski boots.
" which came across as "this is bollox" so I responded in quite a resonable manner. and as I said it can vary by manufacturer and brand as different types of breathable, but accepted method is tumble

It is only the salopets which when wearing in the rain feel like they are leaking around my thighs. When I take them off my trousers are bone dry. So either they are not breathing or they are not stopping the damp air getting through.

get the same feeling riding my bike in goretex motorcycle gear but again no water gets through. Its a temperature thing - water evaporating off the outer surface cools the legs and makes them feel wet.

Hi Brendan,
Sorry mate, but hot tumble dry with Musto breathables is as you say 'bollox' so if thats how you read my response to your advice - you got it spot on.
So lets call this quits and trust all future readers seeking wash instructions will check with their own manufacturers before taking well meaning but possibly wrong advice from the board.
Cheers
JOHN

Does the tumble drying work with breathables using a coating, rather than a membrane? We were definitely advised by the retailer to tumble-dry Goretex stuff, and he'd be answerable if it had knackered the fabric.

My Goretex jacket says "cool tumble dry", but the Gill sailing stuff (not Goretex) says "don't tumble dry"
