Are river breakdown/recovery services worth considering?

Just been contemplating the options if engine irreparably conks out in mid river, far from home

When we first started out we had River Canal Rescue for a couple of years, being mechanically inept they did save me a couple of times, once with a dodgy starter motor and then with a leaky fuel line joint.

How good they are depends entirely on who you get coming out, we had a couple of guys who were for sure skilled "old School" Mechanics, i.e. would do a bodge to get you home if necessary, one time we got a young guy who opened the engine hatch, looked in, tried to start it and said "the engine is old" I know said I its as old as me :) "see what I mean he said, its knackered" did make me fall about laughing but did not get me home and it was fixed by my good friends at Kris Cruisers and went on for another year before I killed it by leaving the raw water cooling off.

Now we have a two/three numbers of reliable guys on the river who we can call on if there is a problem, saves a good few hundred a year on membership etc and normally they are there quicker, one visit RCR sent a guy who was in Wales to see us near Marlow.

so to sum up was nice feeling of secuirty for nervous of breakdown other half when we first started out but now she worries far less and so does my wallet lol
