Braye Beach Hotel

Went there last year. They were trying to be a trendy, chic, boutique type place but the cooking wasn't up to it. They told us the chef was off. I got the impression the (very young) waiting staff had stepped in to do the cooking. Overcooked scallops with a bit of greenery. On the plus side they didn't charge us for the food, and we went to the pub. Maybe they've sorted themselves out.

We ate there last week and thought it was over priced with very poor quality. The shellfish bisque looked good but there was no trace of any shellfish having been anywhere near it, looked and tasted more like tinned oxtail soup.

The brill for a main course (£18-95) was miniscule, one good mouthful and not much more. And again it didn't taste much like brill. And a small portion of mash and about 3 French beans was all that came with it.

Would certainly never eat there again.

I can't speak for the hotel, I always try to get in at the First & Last, across the road, where I have never been disappointed in a meal.

The revitalised Divers, however, also run from the hotel, does fantastic bar food.....the club sandwich has to be tried once by everyone who goes there...the chips are good too.

Aha, First and Last is run by Rita(?) who comes from Exmouth. Often see her sister and niece who's an active member of Exe SC. Excellent place but shut on the night we wanted to eat, mores the pity.

Ineresting what you say about the Divers, must give it a go next time I'm there.

if you want shell fish in Braye, then I suggest stroll up the hill to the fishmongers in St Annes on the left. Buy a massive cooked crab, then visit the supermarket further up on the right for a jar of mayo and a sliced brown loaf, return to yacht because you need a hammer and small spoon to use on the crab, then feast in a sunny cockpit.
