I recently lost the lube out of my starboard outdrive bottle. Last time i manovered to berth i had a collision for the reason i now know why. If i shift into forward {cable extends] forward gear selects. Pulling back into neutral {cable retracts] ok. Pulling further back into reverse [again cable retracts] the drive goes again into FORWARD ?? Perhaps Spannerman can help.

When you say you lost the lube was the drive empty or very low on oil. If so then the clutch which is in the top section has run without oil, if all the cables are moving correctly then you need to open the rear cover to check the operation of the shift linkage fork and the clutch itself. Sounds like something is not moving freely.

Since i had lube loss everything has operated ok.. Dont understand how in can operate freely in F and N but not in R. Or why F selects instead of R. Lube needed about small cupfull to level.

I think you need to take the drive off to inspect the shift cable and check its working correctly, if so then you need to look in the drive top section to see if everything is working as it should. I can’t think of an obvious explanation if the gear wire is working in the correct sense when the gear lever is moved.

I have made another visit to the boat and have found the leg is stuck in Forward gear. The shift cable does not pull out of its jacket. The leg did suffer from a short lube loss . If so what likely damage has been caused causing the gear lock up. Thank you Spannerman we are lucky to have your regular input to the forum.

Well the clutch is stuck in the cone on the forward gear, this could be because the oil got low in the top section, or just adjusted incorrectly. I think you will have to take drain the oil and take the rear cover off (3 bolts) and disconnect the short cable first on the shift plate on the engine then the cable won’t resist you. And push on the horizontal arm which pivots and slides the shift fork up or down. You should then be able to check the gear shifting by turning the prop one way or the other and the clutch will bite and lock one way and slip the other.
Hopefully that will free it off, if not then the clutch is seized to the foreward, which means drive off, input shaft out, top cover off , gear shift shaft and fork out then you can lift out the complete forward and reverse clutch pack.
That is split by pushing down on the ring inside the top of the gear and fishing out the two half moon rings then you can slide the top gear off and the clutch to inspect the cone surface and the clutch grooves.
