"Brave" at Gunwharf

She patrolled, she went fast when she had to, and caught IIs.

She certainly wasn't training people; she was catching them!

The finer points of Naval nomenclature continue to elude me.

Re: \"Brave\" at Gunwharf

If I recall, this boat was built privately for Peter de Savary as the support boat for his America's Cup Challenge. Whilst based upon the Brave class of patrol boat she was built with a larger wheelhouse and accommodation.

I think she is powered by three proteus gas turbine engines driving propellors, not jets. The dustbin lids referred to are covers for the exhausts.

Re: \"Brave\" at Gunwharf

hi newbie! It's always a bit difficult first off cos the ancient threads don't seem so old.

I wdn't have thought (old as he is) de savary is *quite* that old - could he perhaps have had it fixed up?

welcome anyway

Re: \"Brave\" at Gunwharf

Hi,

I read on here somewhere that the 'bloke' that now owns that one was trying to buy one of the hovercraft's at Daedalus to nick the engines out of it for his tub!

I also heard that he kept getting kicked out of different Marinas for being,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,'strange!'

Lovely tub though!

Re: \"Brave\" at Gunwharf

I heard that he had bought a hovercraft to pull the engines out and run this thing.

I suspect if he ever did manage it, at sight of the slightest ripple we'd have a large pile of floating match wood in the Solent.

Several Fairey boats have been the recipient of bigger engines only to subsequently leave some of their spray rails behind!

Re: \"Brave\" at Gunwharf

We did hear it then, and it was on here.

There was a heated post about, I think they were called, the Hovercraft's, Princess Margaret, and Princess Anne?

So he managed to buy one did he?

The Hovercraft Museum at Lee on Solent is open on Easter Sunday, is it any good?

Considering taking wife + sproglet.

Head held low in shame,

note to self: must read full thread prior to posting!

It was in here before Christmas though, I'm sure it was. Can anyone please humour me and find it, I wouldn't know where to start!

Re: \"Brave\" at Gunwharf

There is a very interesting behind this boat - see http://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWHC/Admlty/2003/3154.html for a fascinating legal battle. And the Evening Standard published a couple of articles about the owner and Wentworth Woodhouse in February. He suffered a severe breakdown in the late 1990s, and as he is a relation of mine I have to defend his 'strangeness'. He lost a lot, including an aviation museum, his marriage, and not least his brother Ormond in 1977, killed flying a plane. Ormond flew down the Grand Canyon at one point. WHB has had a fascinating life. Long live British eccentricity.
