I have several reading lamps made of brass which must originally have been lacquered but is now sprouting patches of verdigris. I want to clean them up and treat them with something to keep them looking smart. One option is aerosol car spray making them white but is there a clear product I can use to keep them looking like brass?

I used to use Gedges lacquer but I can't find it with Google so may be it's no longer available.

The clear lacquer for car hub caps works well. Halfords sell it in aerosols.

Best to do lacquering in a warm, dry, dust-free place.

An aternative is to wax the item with Picreator microcrystalline wax.

I have just rubbed down an expensive solid brass chronometer case that had been laquered. I used 1000 wet and, dry, followed by my favourite Solvol Autosol metal polish. It was dull all over, the laquer was lifting and it had heavy verdigris. After half an hour it looked like new. I shall do the Barometer next. thats not quite so bad. I decided not to laquer the high polish I achieved as I hope a regular rub with Duraglit wadding might keep them looking good.
