brass hinges

help,

just ordered some oak planks to make a cockpit table, but I need some solid brass continuous hinges...any ideas where I can get some???

Poter - what you are looking for ( try Google) is Piano Hinge - usually sold by the metre.

Beware :

Make sure that it is brass and not brassed ( plated mild steel)

Even with solid brass flanges the pin is often mild steel - the top quality has a stainless steel pin, the brass pins don't last very long.

Bought a folding cockpit table at the London Show which I think looked smart with solid brass counter flap hinges. Google found me some on the web so I could show you what I meant but what a ludicrous price. http://www.ironmongeryonline.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=5_535_1344

Isaac Lord. The say brass, not plated or EB, but I would still contact them and double check. Product is here :

If the table's hinged at the top surface, I'd go for the counter flap hinges suggested above. They should leave a completely flat surface when the table is opened out, assuming you rebate the hinge into the top.

They also do the brackets to fit the table to a binnacle, although these reflect Lewmars prices.

The other supplier you could look at is Timage, they stand most of the boat shows and sell quality fittings.

This firm sells very high quality hardware, the sort of stuff you get in prestige offices and hotels. I don't know if they sell piano hinge but it might be worth asking, if they do it would probably be of good quality. I bought some door hinges from them and they were far better than anything available at the usual diy places

Try www.classicmarine.co.uk - they do continuous hinge in 6' lengths, various widths. Coming from them, I doubt it would have a steel pin through it, but you can always ring them first.
