Hi folks I am contructing an enclosure in my cockpit to keep the gas bottle and fuel tank out of the sun (if there is any!!), out of sight and make them slightly less nickable. I want to source a brass piano hinge for marine use, the one I bought for £3 from my local hardware shop was magnetic so I assume has a steel rod through it.

Could somone point me in the direction of a supplier please?

They're my port of call for any stuff like that, too. Expensive but reliable, friendly and helpful. They know their stuff, which gives added confidence when ordering.

Why does it have to be piano hinge, though? A couple of strong brass hinges would do the job just as well, I'd have thought.

Have a look around for some stepped stainless steel hinges, they will allow the door to swing 90 degrees and improve access it you ended up going for the front opening option.

Avagoodweekend......

Brass will invariably have a steel pin

[/ QUOTE ] If i bought a hinge from Classic Marine described as brass and found it had a steel pin I would be very cross indeed.

I think (and I stand to be corrected) I want a piano hinge to spread the load. I decided to go for a top opening locker. It is accross the transom where we step on on off our boat so will be stepped on, it will be supported at the front and sides.

The hinge will be screwed into the end grain (if you can call it that) of marine ply through a 10mm deep hardwod strip erpoxied and pinned to the end of the ply round all 4 sides, to give a nice finish and hopefully stop water ingress.

Comments??

Brass hinges typically have stainless steel pins and/or washers prevent wear on relatively soft brass.

[/ QUOTE ] For hanging heavy doors they do but it is quite possible to get all brass hinges. Even Screwfix do them although their piano hinges are electrobrassed.

The fancy butterfly hinges on a lot of the interior woodwork in my boat are brass with silicon broze pins !
