Hi, can anyone help with details of a manufacturer/stockist of brass machine screws and other brass fastenings? Have tried Seascrew and screwfix, most chandlers only stock stainless steel.

Anglia Stainless Ltd (tel.01359 251414) do a pretty full range of specialist marine fastenings. Not sure about brass (which is generally unsuitable for marine applications anyway) but certainly silicon bronze. Always found them to be very helpful and quick.

After having tried to cope with numerous cases of failed brass screws [ruined slots, wrenched-off heads, sheared shafts - you name it] I cannot think of an occasion where the replacement of a brass screw by a stainless one would not be an improvement. In the course of refitting the interior of 'Swallow' I have removed a lot of brass screws, but fitted few,and then only in non-essential uses only.

Again use Anglia Stainless, but remember that Brass screws should never be used on boats for anything vaguely structural. They suffer from DEZINTIFICATION which means they just crumble away. If you must have 'yellow' type screws then use Silicon bronze or just use stainless steel.
