I would kindly like to know from this helpful forum, the best chose here ,as to whether to use brass or phenolic in a GRP stern tube for a 1'' shaft ,the O/D 1 1/2''& I/D 1 1/4'' of this tube is due to confined area .I am going to sleeve one end to1 3/4'' to be able to use the volvo seal and I have a bullflex coupling .I am also cosidering using a section of a cuttlas prior to the vp seal. Thanks for your comments

OK I'll admit I have a commercial interest (and some knowledge) in bearings.

Why not a one piece material? machined as a clearance fit to slide in easily?

Just a thought, if you prefer rubber, then bronze is OK in a bronze bearing carrier or phenolic if its aluminium, but I'd talk to a manuffacturer/supplier.

When I renewed my Cutless bearing, I was told that the phenolic ones were for steel tubes mainly in ferrocement vessels. My own stern tube was of naval brass and the housing that screwed on the end was a naval brass casting, so the brass-cased one was the one to use.
