Stainless, if you're talking those rusty looking stains:

Oxalic acid wipe (make a gel with wallpaper paste), wash off after 10 - 15 minutes, wax to delay onset of further stains.

Brass lacquer is cheap and available from hardware shops. Easy to remove as well.

I bought some ss cleaner from a chandlery and noticed it smelt identical to brasso. Brasso seems to work as well too...

Local hardware shop sells non-slip grip stuff for shower floors, therefore is waterproof. 1" wide and excellent/cheap way of making safe odd bits of deck/cockpit.
