Brand and Broker Loyalty

Can you kind folks settle a difference of opinion ..

It is generally accepted that folks tend to buy bigger and better boats as they journey through their boat owning life (funds etc permitting)

I had always assumed that boating folks had little Brand or Broker loyalty as they 'upsize' their treasured possessions, but I am assured that I am wrong.

What is your experience? Any broker out there with empirical evidence ?

Had three boats in Four years all Bayliner all bought / traded in from same dealer.
No particular reason apart from ease of it as they are on site at marina and had what I required at the right price at that time.

Think it all depends if you liked your last boat and got good service from the broker. I suppose that suggests that most boats are good, and most brokers give a good service? or maybe we just have low expectations?

In the past I have owned an Ocean 37, now own Broom Ocean 38, next will be Broom 450....and so on. Yes I am brand loyal, as to brokers I deal with Broom direct so not applicable.

I am also brand loyal when it comes to cars - it would be interesting to see what the correlation is between our boat and car loyalty?

I've never kept a boat more than 3 seasons and, so far, I've had 2xFairlines, 2xPrincesses, 3xSealines, 1xSearay, 1xBroom and 1xAzimut in 15yrs boating so that makes me a bit of brand whore, I suppose, but think of all those commissions that brokers have earnt out of me whether buying or selling. And I've spread it around a bit, never bought or sold more than twice through any broker. They must love peeps like me

Nope - Four Winns and now looking at Aquador, different brokers too.

As to cars - Fiat x 2, Ford, BL, BMW, Toyota x 2, VW, Saab & Porsche.

If there's a family resemblence, design threads, common build techniques, etc, and your first boat ,proved to be what you wanted, seems logical to stick with that manufacturer, thats what i did anyway.

Nope. The more time you spend boating, the more you refine your own ideas of what you need/what works in a boat. We've yet to see the ideal next boat, so we're looking at all marques. Besides, buying the rpesent one was not exactly a stress free experience.

If you buy from a main dealer i.e. Fairline, Princess, Sealine etc they make it easy to trade up. But it's not so easy to trade out to another marque as they won't give you the same trade in value. So brand loyalty only becomes an issue if you stay with the same one.
We purchased a Fairline Targa 40 last December and traded it back to the same dealer in September by purchasing a Targa 43. They made this very easy with a deal we couldn't refuse. For information this was Fairline Essex. Having now purchased 2 boats within 12 months from them they have been the best by far that we've ever dealt with over the last 22 years!!

2xFreemans, 1xMoonraker, 1xSeamaster, 1xFairline, 2xBroom and now a Nimbus.

I think a lot depends whether you buy new or 2nd hand. I always do the latter and never part exchange.

Like you, never bought new myself or part exchanged. You always lose money that way but I do understand the convenience of part exchanging. When I retire and sail into the sunset, I'm determined then to buy a new boat exactly as I want it

I am loyal to the guy that looks after me and also to the brand/style of boat that I empathise with. I've only bought 2 boats in recent years, and I haven't got the 2nd yet, but I'm happy I've made the right decision, so far.

Repeat buying different from loyalty

I'm a repeat buyer but not loyal. The last two boats have same dealer/same brand. The last 3 cars likewise. In each case, the new thing I was buying was exactly what I wanted and the right deal, that's why I bort it. Not motivated by loyalty at all. I have nearly always bought merc outboards (about 10 between me and my bro) but a couple of years ago Yamaha had a better engineered model at the hp I wanted so I bought that purely becos it was better. So i would never buy what I didn't want just becos of loyalty

If I chose to buy the same brand of boat for my trade up I would of course give the regular dealer first shot at the deal - out of loyalty.

So, dont confuse repeat buying with intrinsic loyalty imho

That was what I was trying to say. When you get good service it puts the provider in pole position next time round.

Thank you Learner, learnt a new word today"empirical".From an earlier life in car sales I would say Brand Loyaty is very strong.Broker Loyalty more a conveniance.Purchased two in the past from the same Broker but it was not because there was any sales skill employed but more because i liked the boats at the price. Like Long John I,ve had a CI 22 and would now own aCI 32 but not enough funds. So I bought an affordable to me Nimbus 27 which is loveley by the way, or will be when I fix it! God, SHMBO thinks I had a strait swop! Which means the overiding factor for me is FUNDS. The question you ask is funds permitting.Take the biggest purchase most people make is their house. No brand loyalty, DEFINATELY no Broker loyalty, or estate agencey loyalty there unless theres an estate agent formulite amongst us who can enlighten us differentley So I would say funds permitting the answer is boat type to suit your needs requirements not Broker or Brand Loyalty

theres a very nice 450os in our Marina I think it was 2nd hull not sure, called Tobermory. The owners are Broom loyal, having got bigger each time.
