Bramble Bank strikes again

the fact that water can hide such an obstacle is a diabolical liberty. I think there should be calls for the Bramble bank to be dredged to a depth of 3m... I means its right in the way of getting to Cowes from Hamble..
 
Shamed to say I did that about 9 years ago. First and only time in the solent with a new to me boat 1 hours old. Plotted round it. Saw Cowes and without thinking steered towards it.

Lifeboat towed us back in. I did make a donation more than sufficient to cover their costs. They were lovely people.

Heat exchangers full of sand. Insurers paid for my stupidity.

My next trip was out of the Uk and direct to La Rochelle. The solent was too busy anyway!

Do you mean that there's a dangerously shallow area right in the way of a busy route and it's not marked on the maps?
Sounds weird...
 
No excuses but they are very big tides at the moment. if only i had my phone with me this morning when i saw Southampton harbor master launch aground in the entrance to the lock at Hythe...

We have all had some problems in our boating lives, I am sure.

Being the skipper of a boat has its responsibilities, the primary one of not endangering passengers and others, so I'm not surprised that it's not 'tea & sympathy' all round. However I don't think I saw any comments that were malicious or overtly rude.
 
Years ago I was pottering around the area to check bearings and so on. When I came to review my gps track I could see that I'd been rather closer to Bramble Bank than I'd actually intended. I felt very stupid and would have felt more so had there been a metre less water under my keel. I would have expected other people to think I was very, very stupid and to laugh at me rather than with me.

Latest incident is one of those things: no-one hurt; a few people inconvenienced and some plastic and metal damaged.

The reason there's no post on the bank itself is that it would last about 48 hours before some behemoth of the seas cut the corner and took it down.:encouragement:

We all make mistakes.

It is charted of course but considering its location it is incredibly poorly marked IMO.

Loads of people hit it. Few make the papers. (I haven’t BTW. But I have run aground due to carelessness in a place that was better buoyed. )
 
Two people injured according to the news article. "One suffered an injury to their chest and knee from the impact and the other a shoulder injury.,,," it said. Bramble always looms in my mind when I'm anywhere near, especially at or near low water. Glad nothing more serious. The boat may well have some damage.
