Braid on braid rope splice

I bought some 16 platt Matt braid on braid rope to make up a new main sheet from a trader at the recent jumble in Ipswich. I'm now trying to make an eye splice in one end and have found the rope has a second core made up of parallel fibres, has anyone come across anything like this before? It makes the core quite solid and it's impossible to get a fid in to insert the cover. I'm stuck and can't figure how to splice it nor find anything online. I'm beginning to think I've wasted my time and money,

No you didn't. Braid on braid would be exactly what it says. Your braid is a solid (parallel) core. If it's any consolation, I have made exactly the same mistake in the past I'm not aware of any techniques for splicing braid with a solid core - but I'm no expert!

Is there a specific need for a splice? No splices on my mainsheet. Fixed end attached with a halyard knot to the becket on the lower block or you could use just a round turn and 2 half hitches. The tail can be whipped to the sheet for neatness.

Some larger diameter braid on braid ropes have an intermediate core.
So three layers, cover, intermediate & core.
To splice you can simply cut away a section of intermediate.

Most braid on braid ropes split the load between the cover and the core 50/50

Dyneema with cover for example has a split more in the region of 10/90

This is only 12mm da. The outer is 16 platt Matt braid, the intermediate is braid again and the inner is about 8 strands, so I just cut away the intermediate and splice as normal?

Yes should be no issues, normally the intermediate core is there to eliminate and slippage between the cover and the core, it provides little extra strength.

I can't remember what the rope is called but there was a length of it onboard when i bought this boat. I searched around and finally found a method of splicing it. I'll see if i can find it.

Edit : It's the same type of construction as "Tachyon" a Google search should find some splicing instructions.

Thanks all for your input. I think a lesson has been learned here, make sure you know exactly what you are buying especially at a jumble. The rope is splicable but only just, it is far from easy and us something I won't be doing again. With luck my fingers and hands will recover!

Yes, it is a pig to splice and i wouldn't deliberately buy any myself.

If the rope is Tachyon it is a climbing rope with a nylon core and will be too streachy for a mainsheet.
Better used as a mooring line.

+1. You can also end for end it occasionally to even out the wear.

You could use a racking seizing to put in an eye. Shorter than a splice and almost as neat.
