I am currently rebuilding my old Bowman heat exchanger due to the aluminium corrosion caused by a sea water leak.

I have rewelded and machined the sealing lip on the casing but now need to refit the O-rings and tube stack. The O-rings I got from a local supplier are the correct size 114 mm i/d (4 1/2") the code dia I specified was 8 mm 5/16" but I am not sure if this is correct.

I could order the one from ASPS but it would take upto 2 months to arrive if at all but I can get any size from my local supplier

My question is does anyone know what is the correct cord size of the O-ring for my heat exchanger.

You could try Manfred at Westfield 4x4 in Lancashire. There's nothing he doesn't seem to know about the Mercedes OM636 engine, which uses this heat exchanger. Worth a pop.

Thks Guys

Yes Theoldsalt it is the size of the O-ring section that I am not sure about. The 8mm section seems too big to compress into the angled section.

I have E-mailed Bowman but no reply as of yet. If I havn't got the info by the end of the week and will phone them.

KAL

Do you have any contact details for Manfred so I could E-Mail him

Thks Alex

Agents yes, Stockists no.

Neither know anything technical about Bowman heat exchangers. Like a lot of local companies they collect agencies and only realy order takers and just pass technical questions back to principal.

This is one think I miss about the UK not having any proper technical people to speak to but it helped me when I was in business as people would cone to me to solve their problems.

OK thks again to all who replied. Just a bit of feedback.

I had a reply from Bowman heat exchangers who say the O-Ring size id 113.67 mm (4 1/2") as I said and the cord dia is 5.33 mm.

I also found a supplier in the UK that would supply at either 0.23 GBP or 0.32 GBP each depending in hadrnesswhere as ASPS and the other supplier posted would charge 4.48 GBP.

Just shows what the marine markup is.

I will have to get local as I don't have time for a shipment from the UK.

I think in the case of a 25p O ring you can understand why suppliers will charge £4. Selling one or two costs as much in admin as selling 200, and in our business we reckon it costs us £7 per invoice, hence a minimum order charge prevalent in most trade only businesses.

I am surprised that bearing suppliers will sell just one or two at these low prices. Allowing for stocking and accounting for the products with such low values means they are selling each one at several £ loss.

But they may see it as cheap advertising and PR.
