Bow roller wheel - machining

That could be the solution to my issue. My new to me Catalac has a bow fitting for the chain to go through, but has never had a roller - there's no sign of holes for the axle. Would it be sensible to fit one?

Depends on the size of the cheeks. If you fit a roller it will push the chain further forward. If the cheeks do not still provide side restraint it could allow the chain to jump completely out of the bow fitting.

You could make your own if you have an electric drill and a hole saw kit; buy a plastic cutting board and cut a series of discs.
