Maurice Griffiths talked about a hot drink of Bovril on a cold night. I like it after a dip off the boat. Are/were we the only two fans?

Bovril Cubes always live in my Bergan when I'm sculling about in the woods and make a nice drink on a cold day. A dip off the boat !! 😮 No chance, I only float on it, not flail about in it...:giggle:

I see it is nearly £5 for a small jar. Not the cheap comforting drink I remember drinking many decades ago.
I am a big fan of Marmite on toast and the occasional slab of Black Pudding so I would probably try it again,
but doubt I would buy a jar for regular consumption. I vaguely remember a mug of Bovril at a cold and bleak football
match I was dragged to.

Not my cup of tea. But, then again, tea isn’t my cup of tea either.
For hot nourishing, I revert to my childhood and have Horlicks or, just black coffee.

Somewhere I have it in the back of my mind that naval types during WW2 had bovril with port in it, perhaps it was Jack Hawkins in Cruel Sea?

Marmite is just cheap residue from another process. Not sure I want to know how Bovril is made.

Bovril is not very nice on toast, and Marmite is not very nice as a drink, but each is excellent in its own natural environment. Bovril is much the easiest and best comfort drink for a watch in the cockpit, but rum when off-duty of course.

I was on an exercise in Northern Norway with some Danish Marines who drank a Bovril-like soup make from concentrate in tubes. They made it more palatable with Gammeldansk which is a pretty foul drink.

Warning! Not to be read before meals..

Back in the 1960's /70's and probably long before, there were Dredger like ships on the River Thames. They plied their trade between a major sewage plant in London and the outer Thames Estuary. Once offshore clear of the North Foreland they would open the hull bottom doors and discharge into the ebb tide.
These ships owned or operated by the old London County Council as was, were known as " Bovril Boats " and given a very wide berth by all but desperate unemployed Seaman.. 😂

True. Wikipedia has a Bovril Boats entry.

It's not something I have on board or want to drink. I have drank it in the past and while it is okay, I found the saltiness was something negative. As a high purine food it can contribute to, or cause a gout flare up if one is susceptible to gout.
