Bottom Action winch levers

I have looked high and low to find winch levers for my old Tuph-fittings (later became Barton) sheet winches without luck. The levers are like the Barton 602 type levers but wider, anyone any suggestions? They are flat levers 1.5 inches wide, 12 inches long and about 0.25 inches thick.
I suspect I'll have to get some made. Would aluminium be strong enough?
 
Having the same type of winches on my boat, I have been looking for spare handles in case one goes for a swim, but without luck. I too was planning to get them made, but using stainless steel flat bar which is roughly the same dimensions as my handles. The only problem is the bakelite ball at the end, which I haven't yet figured out how to replicate.
 
I suppose thats the way to go, I am down to one handle. I was thinkng of making the ends out of wood. There is an american company called macMasterCarr, check out their website, you can buy all sorts of knobs and balls etc...... no really! A bag of 10 1.5 inch hardwood balls is only 6 bucks. Got plastic and rubber ones too.

I made up a new winch handle for my halyard winches, also from flat s/s bar. The handle is a bit of PVC bar, with a bolt (set screw) through it. If I was being picky I'd change it for tufnol, 'cos it matches the winch. The set screw (8mm x 50mm IIRC) is the strong bit, held firmly onto the bar with a nut and then another one loctited onto the end to hold the handle butr let it rotate. For neatness, the handle is counterbored and the nut is inside. It's lasted about 20 years so far.
