Bosco boathook vs \"Handy Duck\"

Hi,

I've seen some strong recommendations here for the Bosco boathook, and we've now decided that we need something like that. Not a line-threader; it needs to quickly fix a line strong enough to hold the boat in adverse conditions.

It appears that the Bosco and the Handy Duck (crappy name) both offer this. Before we commit either way, has anyone specifically made a comparison between these two? What were the reasons for choosing one or the other?

Also, why would the Bosco boat hook cost £69.99 from Mailspeed, but only £34.04 +VAT direct?

Thanks in advance, Tony

Because I think they've dropped the price the b******s.

I bought direct and I paid more than £34 plus VAT, and that was only a month ago!

For £34+vat go for the Bosco.

I looked at both a few years ago (when the Bosco was £70) and decided on the Bosco for a number of reasons.
1) It came complete with telescopic pole, warp and ready to use.
2) It is releasable without the need to use the pole again - just pull the release cord - handy when the boat is pitching about.
3) A steel strop can be attached for securing to bollards or large dock cleats, again releasable by pulling the release cord.
4) All stainless steel construction verses FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic)

The only down side I have found is the relatively short warp attached to the Bosco but on the odd occassion where a longer warp was useful/needed I made up a short extention for both the warp and the release cord.

I am sure many people have the Handy Duck and are happy with it, I just felt the Bosco was a superior product and when I totalled up the cost of the extras needed for the Handy Duck the Bosco (even at £70) was not that much more expensive.

There seems to be a chandler price war going on. Wonder who will go bust next?

My Handy Duck snapped - it's not man enough for the job - don't bother

Received today, and having lots of fun hooking things around the house. The missus objected to my attempts to snare geese or chickens with the wire loop.

The hook's a good solid assembly, and I'm happier with that vs the plastic Duck.

Shame the warp is so short, as Cliff says, but that'll be easily fixed if its a problem.

Final price was £58.95 including VAT, the wire loop and delivery.
