Hi all, we are hoping to spend more time on our boat soon, however it is fitted with the normal foam mattreses & are not very comfortable, has anyone any info on memory foam!! or properly sprung mattreses, do they work & are they worth the money, regards mm1.

Despite 6 months successful living aboard with very good quality 5" foam mattresses on a virtually new boat I would still recommend getting a sprung mattress - your back will thank you for it.

Hi thanks,i hope someone can supply a name & or phone n/o of people that make these better quality mattreses, regards mm1.

Re: Boring, info required on foam or sprung mattresses please.

Depends on how you rate comfort, I replaced my bunk cushions with 100mm mid-density foam and 50mm of contour foam and it made a considerable difference to how sleeping on board felt.

However the original 100mm deep foam was elderly and how much of the improvement was due to just changing the foam I wouldn't like to commit.

If doing a re-run, I'd go for high-density substrate under the contour foam.

You certainly can't feel the bunk boards beneath and the general result is superior to most sprung mattresses.

As I spend about 200 nights a year on board, there is a tendency to compare the sleeping comfort with the expensive contour foam mattress at home (and no it doesn't compare with that).

Re: Boring, info required on foam or sprung mattresses please.

We have at home, in the boat and in the caravan decent foam matresses with memory foam toppers, cant complai.

I am a big fan of slats on boats and prefer this to sprung mattresses. Enables easy access to below-berth storage, better air circulation etc. We have ordinary foam on mattresses and it's much more comfortable than most hotel beds I sleep in. Also enables less bulky mattresses.

Our system is bedflex(.com) but I believe you can get a similar product from Ikea.

We have the original foam mattress, but have added a memory foam topper (which comes with a cover), which was easily cut to size.

I have had a bad back, but have spent 6 months living on the boat at one time with this set up and no problems.

We bought our memory foam topper from a market, which was much cheaper than the other places we looked.
