I have a Morgan 41 O/I lying Larnaca, Cyprus. The Borg Warner velvet drive gearbox had a massive ATF leak. The oil would empty within 15 minutes !
After 3 grueling days ,i have managed to remove the gearbox....a back breaking task in this center cockpit boat with the engine very inacessable !
Does anyone know of a repair/testing location in Cyprus? Any other ideas will be greatly appreciated !
Many Thanks !

Could not locate the leak for certain......anyway ,the drive is off the engine now...whew ! How to proceed now ?

cheers

As the gearbox is now on the deck the seals are easy to replace, the rear one entails removing the shaft flange, then the six set bolts, slide the bearing housing off the shaft tap out the old seal and tap in a new one. The front seal is not difficult either, mark the pump housing and case, (for reasembly) remove the four set bolts and slide the housing away from the case, push out old seal from inside to out, replace new seal from out side to in, make sure it is flush with the housing, offer up, align the marks you made and bolt up. Job done. service kit A4867HA, contains the bits you need. Or front seal is71c-62a, rearseal is71c-110. Borg Warner, PO Box 2688, MUNCIE, INDIANA 47302. TELE 317/2848411. JUST FOUND THIS administration@velvetdrive.com may be later info?

Before doing any big job check carefully the hoses that go from the gearbox to the oil/water heat exchanger. I had the same problem and the engineer uselessly dismounted twice the gearbox (also a BW Velvet Drive on a Perkins 4.108) and checked all seals until by mere chance found a small stupid cut in one of the hoses.

71C

G'day guys,

I have a 71CR on my Perkins 4.236 that has lost drive.

When i put it in gear there is a cruching noise that persists and the FWD and REV gears do not engage (the prop turns very slightly but not anything like the rate it should).

I am sure i will need to remove the gearbox to fix the problem, but any suggestions on what the problem might be? I am thinking clutch plates or gears are mashed and need replacing. Being that its the same in FWD and REV I am inclined to think its the gears themselves that need replacing.

I cant find replacement gears for sale - does anybody here have any suggestions?

"Crunching noise" = no good!

Besides this unhappy thinking, fortunately, I have some positive advice:
1) download the proper manual from: http://www.motoren.ath.cx/menus/velvet.php
2) disassemble the transmission.
3) find the needed parts at: http://www.ebasicpower.com/c/ALL3G/

Good luck!
