I thought you might be interested in a couple of pictures of what the local north wind gets up to. In January of this year, gusts of 173 kph were recorded. Sitting in my large (and parked) Subaru estate at the time was like being on a bouncy bit of the Northern Line! The Bora blows all along the Dalmatian coast, sometimes in summer. You have been warned!

That reminds me

We once had a fly drive holiday in Iceland, staying in farms. One night we were woken by the wind, which was rattling a farmhouse which was carved into the hillside. When we mentioned the wind to the farmer in the morning, he said something along the lines "No that wasn't windy. Windy was the day I found my 4x4 two fields away from where I'd parked it. On its roof."

And if you've ever seen Icelandic 4x4s...

Re: That reminds me

I was travelling in Iceland a few years ago in one of their monster multi-wheeled drive buses on a breezy day when the 4x4 driving in front got blown off the road and sideways into a ditch. And there's me moaning because my Windex recently got blown off during a winter storm and rapidly disappeared in the Porthmadog direction. I think we are lucky.

Excellent pictures from metabarca.

What's happening in the one of the harbour with white blobs in the water (second one along, top row)? And how did that boat on its side end up there?

Those blobs of white are whirls of spray being whipped up by the wind (running more or less left to right). There's only about 100 yards of sea to the left of the quay you can see towards the top (which quay also appears in the first picture. The Dolomites show up beyond - about 70 miles away.
The yacht got blown off its trailer; by the looks of things, it was parked more or less bow into wind in one of the city-centre marinas.
This winter was particularly entertaining because it rained, then it snowed, then the wind came. For three days, there was not a car on the road (and precious few pedestrians too, except for those on skis or with crampons). This is the wind that has blown over trains, lorries into the sea and pedestrians head over heels since recorded time. We love it.
