Hope to make a late-season dash across to top up the cellar. Where, let's say between Cherbourg and L'Aber Wrac'h is most convenient for wine shopping? I'm talking supermarket not caves.

Cherbourg has Carrefour but it's a bit of a hike from the marina and no van service. Lezardrieux has a complimentary van service but limited stock. Any suggestions?

Have you tried Roscoff. There's a Hypermarché.

But on the road out of town, less than a mile, there are at least four specialist wine sellers e.g.

The owner of Roscoff Wine Seller (o2.98.61.24.10) is also the owner of the Roscoff sailing school. Very good prices at the end of the season, and excellent advice.

I know its not what you asked for but you could consider Normandie Wine in Cherbourg. They are opposite the Carrefour, and from memory (I was there in my car last week) they will deliver to the marina but you can email/phone them to check.

They have a good range and when I was in the Cherbourg store last week had at least 20 bottles open for tasting.

I didn't buy any on that occasion as I had already been to Majestic, but used the Ouistreham store a few years ago with some friends - very knowledgable staff, happy to open bottles for tasting and we all left very happy with our selections.

Normandie wine up by MacDonalds next road behind Carrefour are good and you can pre-order on line, they will deliver to the boat. Majestic inside Carrefour you can pre-order on line but when I tried in March they were out of stock of 80% of what I picked despite the on line catalogue being just two days old, I told them to stuff the whole order, total waste of space. We went to Auchan (we had a car) on the edge of Cherbourg town, excellent choice and lots of special offers, so worth a taxi ride IMO. Otherwise we always used Carrefour and wheeled a trolley load back to the marina, there are usually other trolleys there to mate with and get your euro coin back. No where else convenient at all really west of Cherbourg that has good stock, good prices and is near to the boat. Next place of any note is Camaret, anchor off and take the dink to the slip by the supermarket or with shallow draught get in there around HW with the cat? Trebeurden has a bus service I think to the supermarket, never been though and I'm not a Trebeurden fan, too pricey anyway.

a bit of trek upriver but there is a pontoon right beside the hypermarket at Chateaulin, top of the river Aulne, unfortunately I don't think the lock is wide enough for your cat but might be worth checking. I was there last weekend clearing the shelves so they should have restocked by now

I went up to Chateaulin in June. The river was full of young yobs making a pain of themselves so went back down to moor at Port Launay. Didn't notice the hypermarket as I was busy turning short round and keeping clear of missiles. The lock is plenty big enough. Bit of a long way just for a booze run though.

The entrance to the Aulne is at the bottom right. On the stretch that curves back to the North are some rotting warships. That section is buoyed but once you get beyond the bridges (headroom > 20m) you just follow the centre of the river until you get to the lock (approx 20m x 9m) then the canal section is another couple of miles to Chateaulin. Berthing at Port Launay just inside the canal section is nice - and free. There is a low bridge at Chateaulin preventing access to the rest of the canal.

Super U in Treguier is about 15 minutes walk up the hill. They were advertising free delivery to the marina but we were there about an hour before they closed on Bastille Day so we didn't think it was worth asking. Might be worth giving them a ring to check.

Thanks for that Snowleopard.

I have been there as far as the warships and suspension bridge. I was put off going further because I had no info at all on the upper reaches, later I found out that it does not seem to be charted and a road map might be the best bet.

Brilliant film, Pete: Eat yer heart out, Dylan Winter.....

What could you possibly want with all that wine and beer? :D

Surprised by that, I've always found it quite sleepy up there and never noticed a yob problem. The Hypermarket is on the right just before you get to Chateaulin and beside the hypermarket is a large parking area with a canoe club (never seen anyone there its always closed), in front of which is a pontoon this is the one to go shopping from. The visitors pontoon is up in the town of Chateaulin but is only long enough for two boats now, payment was declined by the lovely town hall staff and she did not even want a deposit for the shower key.

As you say it is a very long trip for a quick booze run . . . . very picturesque though.

for anyone else interested: Last time I went up early on the tide and got there a couple of hours before high water and found nothing less than two metres depth the whole way up
and find it a very easy river to navigate. usual rules apply, stick to the outside of the bends and in the middle on the straighter sections. 12 miles from the suspension bridges to the lock.

I've had deliveries of booze (and vittles) from them. Also from a supermarket in Pontrieux.

I went up too early, around half tide, and found the profile of the river bed is pretty much a 'V' and, up to the last half mile, it was OK to follow the middle of the river. Approaching the lock about an hour before official opening time I tried to park on the quay just below the lock. I hit something pretty solid a yard or so off the wall and was wondering what to do next when the lock opened for me.

Paimpol

If you can fit through the lock, you will not do any worse than Paimpol. Le proprieteur of the Cave in the centre of the town is more than happy to deliver to the boat. We have been to see him each autumn for the last few years; give him a price range and region and he will recommend the ones to buy and those to avoid. We always came away with a few 'bonus' bottles as well. We have never had any problems with any of our purchases from him.
