Okay, I like reading!!!

...But it's usually restricted to the evening standards top 10. However for my birthday I was given a signed and dated first edition of Sir Alec Rose's "My Fair Lady" 1968.

Now I haven't read it (Don't worry I am about to) but wondered what it might be worth, how many there are, etc.

No intention of selling it by the way, just wondering if I need to move it off the book shelf and into the draw with the harry potter first editions and play boys (Still in there plastic [collected as future antiques of course])

On a side note I expect there are certain pic's etc that people would like to see, but not sure about Copyright etc. If somebody could check (YM) I could scan (with permission).

PS: It does have that lovely book smell! (Can't scan that)

Value? £5.99 new and used from Amazon I'm afraid. The modern reprints are going for 92p! I have that book and read it once 15 years ago which is unusual for me as I reread books I like. I regret I did not enjoy the tale although I must acknowledge the bravery of the man. There was something about it that I didn't really like. I wonder if you will find the same. About the same time, I bought and read Robin Knox-Johnson's book and enjoyed that enormously and have re-read it several times.

I have a number of my father's books about motoring and motor racing in the 30's and 50's which are great fun. Amazing all the trouble they went to to get a car up to 70 miles an hour!

Think you'll find you were given a musical score (published by Rogers & Hammerstein) but probably valuable all the same if suitably autographed.

The book they would have given you if they had any respect was My Lively Lady by Sir Alec Rose. I have a signed and dated first edition. 1968 by any chance?

If yours is the musical score, I might consider limited access to my hallowed tome.

I also have a signed first edition copy of RK-J's A world of my own, but have never entirely reconciled his dropping the hook for a fag and mail break with my concept of a non-stop voyage.

Yes I remember being a bit disappointed by that bit but in comparing it with Lively Lady, as I remember Sir Alec stopped down under (as he planned to do) and had some repairs and hospitality including sleeping ashore. All has to be put in the context that I couldn't and wouldn't want to do it. Mine is the 68 edition, bought second hand in what used to be a wonderful second hand bookshop in Brightlingsea which has now gone. Its aprapo of nothing but there is a card glued to the flyleaf dated 'London 6.12.1968 (which curiously is my birth date) "We thank you very much for all your kindness and teaching us so well, With best wishes - Ingrid, Charlotte, Karin-Marie, Ruth, Margrit, Maria, Vera, Marlena, Jocelyne, Dominique, Karin, Silvana, and Christa" Always struck me what an unusual collection of names and brings up rather attractive visions don't you think?

Interesting list of names- sound very Scandinavian. RK-J redeemed himself somewhat in my mind by his generous praise for Day Mellon, and fully agree that his was a termendous achievement by any standard.

apropro nothing but my birthday 7/12
