I shall get them all

Books are very usefull, but it's experience that counts. Take it slowly and pick up experience over the years. Build up experience in known waters, so if you punch the wrong thing into the GPS, you will know it is wrong.

Being familiar with a paper chart, will give you the big picture and help you know, if the boat is going the right way.

I have pretty much the same question as Capt Daz.

Won't Tom Cunliffes book be very sailboat orientated? Thanks
They are an entertaining read even if you never leave the house!
Yes, the passage details need to be reconsidered given you might be doing more than 5 knots, but the headlands and rivers and rocks are still in the same place ;)

Thanks very much, So shall I, Then I shall have to ask Kawasaki which way up to hold the map in April, My life is in his hands (The fiance can fend for herself, She's a better swimmer) Wonder if he knows the challenge he is taking on.

Capt Daz. That boat looks fabulous. Getting it to the East Coast? Caledonian Canal will it be?

I have no idea, I have recently become aware of the Lowland canal which would work out much cheaper, But it will be my holiday so I might treat myself to the Caledonian.

its the RYA day skipper course notes I was reffering to ISBN1-905104-13-8

Perhaps i should have been more specific;)

I know, that's actually what I followed many years ago, but I am well used to a classroom scenario (from both sides of the desk).

Tom's book takes the same syllabus & covers it in a far more readable & easy to follow format. He also suggests trips out for "practical exercises" on your own boat at each stage as you work your way thro the syllabus to help you consolidate the classroom exercises. Navigation on a boat, for example, is quite different to doing it in a nice warm steady school desk. I was quite impressed by it when I read it recently for a bit of "revision". I certainly couldn't read the RYA version again, I would just get bored & fed up.
