Hello
I'm chartering a 31 (full batten main sail) in southern Corse, and planning (weather permitting) to visit Bonifacio. Still need to read the pilot fully but i was wondering if anyone can give some insight on the straight please? is it a 31 too small for which general conditions? I know it always depends but generally speaking can we do some assessment? can i climb the straight with a F4-F5 max? thank you

Plan to arrive in Bonifacio early, both to get a space and manage the wind. On a 'normal' day the wind through the Strait is sea breeze augmented and channeled, it can easily reach F6-7 in the afternoon usually from the W.

Its well worth a visit, imo. One of the most dramatic entrances I've been in through

Thanks RobbieW, I can already see forecasts for next week (when we go) mounting in afternoon to F5 W(currently) but I expect to be higher for channeling as you say, so we will plan to go very early, or we could just go the day before that is forecasted F3. I chartered a 33 last year in greece and was suffering the waves a bit, but there shoudlnt be too much fetch for even a 31ft if I manage the wind. thanks

Don't miss the spectacular Lavezzi islands to the east.

As with most places with bad reputations, it is not always windy in the Bonifacio Strait. On the day this photo was taken it was utterly benign but a couple of days later we anchored on the Sardinia side for nearly a week in F7.

Out of Ajaccio?
we will descend from Solenzara, on the coast maybe st giulia, then we 'll probably (try to ) get to bonifacio on the wednesday as its forecasted calm. then we will head back step lavezzi early morning for either get back to the coast of corsica, or a buoy in budelli or similar (if I find one). saturday again solenzara...

Thanks its beautiful, im monitoring the forecast and adapting the plan. one local skipper told me that bay of the picture (should be the southern) is not great with mistral. we might visit on our way back to budelli the day after ealy morning.
