I swept up the leaves on Sunday and started a bonfire. I've just looked out of the kitchen window and its still smoking like Old Harry's shag - is this a record?

I had a bonfire during the summer but decided to save for later use a very old large dry log which I left a metre or two from the fire. A couple of weeks later I happend to notice smoke from the office window and looked out to see the field on fire!

Much rushing round with water, stamping and bashing with spades by The Lady Wife and I put it out. It transpired a spark must have entered the end of the dry log and set it burning inside, at some point it decide enough was enough and exploded showering the area with burning bits of wood.

Well it could be - the old pipe's sort of round and kinda black.... as to tantrum sex - er tantric sex - well at my age its all a bit shrivelled up now ... a bit like JJs leaves, but it helps to pass the long winter nights. If I can stay awake long enough to get a round to it.

OBTW, has anyone got a spare 'round to it' knocking around, by the way? My old boat seems to need rather a lot of them this year.

Hmmmm...

Used to have a holiday job working on forestry. We'd knock down trees, strip all the minor bits and pieces off and drag'em out for the saw mill lorry to collect. Then gather all the bits and pieces toghther, slosh a bit of diesel over them, throw on a match then walk away. One day the cowman asked if we could bring back some ash for his garden. No problem. Next time we were up there we took a tractor and ran a bucket into the ash from an old bonfire. Drove back to the farm and dumped it up against his fence. He whinged like a goodun when he found his fence was scorched. Ashes were still hot at least a week after we thought the fire had burned out.

It's clear that Old Harry should have been using a lubricant. This will also minimise the smell of burning rubber (I assume Old Harry is a practitioner of safe sex)

Safe sex yes, but the smell tends to remind onlookers (!) of pig skin proofed with stockholm tar.

By the way old harry, the Old Harry to whom I refer is that man whose name is copyright JDS.

Re: Nov the 5th

was on a wednesday this year. So thursday I'm collecting up the debris from our spectacular. The fire was out and raked flat so I threw the used fireworks, some of them these multi launch box things, onto the ash area for disposal with my next fire. On the friday we were drawn from the TV by a mini fireworks display coming from our garden. Further investigation found that, even though it had rained lightly, peat in the soil was smouldering and had touched off the fireworks.

But then there's a peat bog in Ireland been burning for 10 years or more.

Re: 999

At our YC we had a wooden dolphin, which was constructed by the MOD during WW2, it was (as to be expected) a substantial affair and had been in position for more than 50 years. In its time the Medway tides had relentlessly come and gone twice a day, it was covered in weed and mud. Unfortunately it was starting to show the ravages of time with the top rotting away and it was being discussed in various committees as to what was the best course of action to deal with it.
The cruiser class obviously wanted to keep it as they used it to scrub off and do minor repairs during low waters.
Now, every Nov 5th, we have a bonfire for the kids (which includes most adult members) and the fire is always built 30+ feet away from this edifice but on the particular night the wind was blowing the flames in the general direction of the dolphin. After some time it was noticed by the crowd that the top of the edifice was in fact burning. So after the flames (from the bonfire) had subsided a ladder was found and a hose run out to quell the fire in the dolphin. Many members helped with this operation and succeeded in “putting it out”.
We always time our celebrations to co-inside with a low water so that when we all retired to bed we are safe in the knowledge that the tide is coming in and any fire MUST be put out.
WRONG, the next day the dolphin had completely burned to the ground causing many problems for the (then) commodore who was accused of deliberately burning it down. Apparently the inside had still remained alight and despite the tide coming in the fire had simply followed it down inside the timbers and burnt the whole lot off.

This is never going to be a record for the longest fire, but I bet it is a record for one of the most discussed. It went on for months if not years.

James, take a trip to the Warren House Inn on Dartmoor where the fire in the grate in the bar is reputed to have been continuously alight since the mid 19th century. The ale's not bad, either

Yes, JJ I didnt take it personally - but couldnt resist responding. And to be safe, I call myself 'oldharry' not JDS's famous Old Harry - though friends say there is a certain likeness in both temprament and boats.....

... I was actually thinking of the Old Harry rocks off Studland, Poole when I picked the name, having been there a couple of days before.
