Have you read the article on the ships master who is sailing with a bogus c of c ?
and has done so since 1998.What did he get ? nine months and £500 fine. I wonder how may other fraudsters are sailing without the proper paperwork ( i think that i have come across a few whilst sailing)./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

The number of forged or 'bought' cert of competency which I personally have encountered in the last twelve months is into the thirties, and I believe quite a few have got passed me. Mostly from Far Eastern countries, but an increasing number from 'new' European countries. There are literally thousands of 'em out there, and not all ship owners are too particular on checking authenticity - all they want is someone who is 'cheap', will work for two years or more (with no leave) and wont complain.
This is a situation which has been going on for years and the 'authorities' seem reluctant, or incapable, to rectify the problem.

The director general of the International Transport Federation was given a first mate's certificate by his office as a get-well present when he was in hospital. They'd bought it from Panama for $5,000. Others in the business said they'd been robbed. Port inspection reports show enormous numbers of fraudulent certificates but many of these are relatively minor elements of the STCW requirements, such as fire-fighting or first aid. But many are far from minor, such as radar competence.

The pubs of Aberdeen used to be good for bogus certs, mainly for the offshore industry, but some were STCW certs.

Re: I\'m a Chief Engineer

Well according to my Russian, rather decorative cert I am. Mate of mine who is a Chief got me for a present. Cost about 20$ but it's the real thing.

When he got his Panamanian cert it had two pre certified blanks in the envelope with it. Dodgy medicals are commonplace.

Any area of certification is open to abuse. The building industry CITB certs are traded in pubs nationwide.

There was a TV programme about a month back

about the underhand, unethical, uncaring practises of the pharmaceutical industry.

Maybe it's about time a similar programmme was made about the shipping biz.
