As the other thread seems to be going around and around in circles I should like to ask

how often is the loo cleaned while on passage?

How old is the bog brush?

when did you last clean or replace the bog brush holder?

Seawater is hyperosmotic and has excellent cleaning powers, so the answer is - as often as necessary. I expect people to brush away any brown stains, but otherwise, plenty of pumping will do the job for our Jabsco. Our brush and holder are a few years old but look new.

Our Lavac gets brick cleaner through it as and when, My daughter presented me with a dozen bog brushes and holders @ 29p each from Ikea about 2 years ago, we are half way through them.

The loo and heads are cleaned daily, bog brush is old but kept in container with disinfectant, cleaning bucket and spontex used to clean compartment are solely used for that purpose and kept in the heads. Copious use of antibacterial spray after cleaning, not wiped off but left to dry in situ.

In both of KTLs threads on this subject many have lauded seawater as a disinfecting agent, just spent a half hour of my life googling, faecal contamination, seawater, disinfectant and variations of same.

It would appear that faecal pathogens can live quite happily in seawater, mind you as always when reading tech papers they do give the impression that you shouldn't approach seawater in anything less than an Ebola style contamination suit, especially in estuary areas!

Doen't the bog fairy clean it same as at home ... just as the sock fairy picks up dirty socks left on the floor.

I use a dinghy bailer normally, but on the very odd occasion I've had need for the other use I have a brand new bucket from Mr Tes & Co which has an biodegradable bin liner put in it and the whole lot is then jettisoned... so in both cases "every time it is used" ;)

Don't have/need one

very good answer

so the bog you don't have never gets cleaned

when on the bucket and chuck it system we had a separate bucket - it got a bit of a rinse in the sea and went back into the stern locker

Bog brushes are an invention of the devil. Guaranteed to harbour infection and nasties. Skid marks can be removed by hand by wiping with bog roll which is then flushed away and with care, it can be done quite delicately. You'll be washing your hands anyway and we have a pump action hand steriliser in the heads as well for extra belt and braces disinfection.

Define bog... my bucket fulfils the function, plus other things as well... and given the sheer amount of issues yachties seem to have with the plumbed in jobbies (uh.. poor choice of word :)) I'm extremely happy with it....

I remain guilt free with my biodegadable poop sacks - which I bought after the one and only occasion where I used a bucket without one... . :D
