Right, next on the to do list is the toilet/heads/bog/jacks/**** house. When I pull the pump handle up it goes fine, when I push it down it spits at me, not a nice looking kind either...

It's a RM69 toilet (Raske en Van Der Meyde) and I see that it's still made (although ours is of an indeterminate age), should I strip the pump unit down and try to find the fault or just replace the pump section of the entire operation?

My loo is the RM69 type. The pump wore out, sounds a bit like yours. I looked at price of the bits needed and compared with price of new loo. There was so little in it, I fitted new loo. I bought an RM69 again as it meant I didn't have to change any of the plumbing, screw holes, in and outs etc.

New loo is fab.

seal worn on shaft strippiston out and fit new O ring, cost about £0.50. May even be better to get a full pump overhaul kit ad replace the wearing parts, bit dearer but cheaper than a new unit.

Thanks for the advice lads, think I'll have a look at the boat fund as rummaging around someone else's pipes doesn't inspire me, we haven't even been able to use it once since we bought the boat so can't share any of the blame!

It's not a big amount to replace like for like, but should I go for another RM69 or is there a better quality alternative?

I replaced my loo with a Blakes lavac, superb, enormous pump that doesn't spit anything unpleasant at you. Bit pricey but well worth it

How come a boat bog costs £150 and more, and
lasts only a few seasons of light use.

You can walk into Wykes and get a whole 'suit' including bath. bog, cistern, basin AND taps for the same money.

OK that would be a pretty 'crap' bathroom. but it would still last years of heavy daily family use.

Because it's a boat!!

B & Q plastic toilet seat and lid........a few quid.

Lavac Zenith plastic toilet seat and lid......£130!!

Who invents these prices?

The guy with the really big boat on the end of Pontoon A.

That is not a fair comparison. The Zenith seat has the sealing mechanism in it to create the vacuum. Unique to this model and B&Q probably sell more seats in a day than the number of Zeniths ever made!

Very few people have ever made serious money out of Yachts and gear. Why? low volumes, huge variations in product (and a lot of cheapskate owners).

On a positive side, look at the few products where there is volume - and the Jabsco toilet would be an example - and prices are very competitive. Now under £100, less than it was 10 years ago. Lifejackets and liferafts are other examples.

Things that have not gone down in price are either those that use scarce and/or exotic materials or where lots of labour is needed and volumes don't justify getting them made in China.
