Hi, I tried to remove the stain on the body but it was very hard or even can't remove it. Is there any suggestion how to remove it? i.e. some special chemical that won't damage the gelcoat. Thanks a lots!

Hi Muskie,

Is the stain on you or on the boat? If it is on the boat first try a good hull cleaner like Farecla. Do not use a cleaner designed for cars as these will scratch the gel. And do not use use a cream kitchen cleaner as these are abrasive. If a hull cleaner will not shift the stain try a black stain remover, which you can get in the chandlery. I think you will find that removes most stains.

What colour is the stain, what was it made by and how big is it, a little more information is always helpful if you want the best response possible

Try Y10, think that's what it's called, available at all chandlers. It's a gel to remove stains on fibreglass and gelcoat.

Yes thats the stuff Y10 jelly not to be confused with KY jelly big mistake !

Y10 is acidic so wear rubber gloves, avoid contact with clothing also if it contacts your eyes wash it out immediatly. Wash the Y10 off the boat after the stain has disappeared usually within 15 minutes.
My Y10 is on the boat but I am sure you will find the above correct and useful.
Regards Trevor.

Get yourself some Oxalic Acid crystals from the local chemist, dissolve in water and try that - I think it's the active ingredient in Y10 and a fraction of the cost; I 'paint' it on, leave for a few minutes and the wash off with copious amounts of water. I've found it works well. Remember to use the correct PPE!

Try Oxalic acid,
about £5 a tub from the chemist and will last you for several years,

The stain is on the hull and either came from the water that drain on the deck (light grey vertical color line - all around the boat) or some the "scratch" from some boat that the use the used tire as fender (black color and the area is about 2 sq feet).

Another tip is to mix the oxalic acid with wallpaper paste to stop it running. I have used it, don't do as I did and mix up too much, for most stains you will only need a very small amount.

Would regular boat polish do the job? Safely and environment friendly?

I the same problem have tried Y10 and some of the more popular hull cleaners without success.

Yesterday I tried Cream Kitchen Cleaner but very diluted and it worked well removing the black stains around the engine exhaust , should I continue to do this ? I did not see any scratches but now worry that this was not the best.

If all the chemical cleaners fail to work what is the answer?

Thanks in advance.

I've used cream cleaner on my GRP boats for years and have not seen any bad effects - in fact I've found it's about the only thing that will get some marks off without a great deal of effort e.g. black fender scuffs etc. Never seen any scratching effect.

Steve.
