Bobstay

The bobstay on my boat is stainless steel wire, attached to the bow and the 'sprit with rigging screws. there is no quick release mechanism. The mooring terminates in synthetic rope, which is protected with thick plastic tubing. Will the bobstay be likely to chafe through this tubing and eventually the rope? I don't fancy undoing a rigging screw every time I moor, but fancy losing the boat even less!

I find sod's law works against me on most things like this and just the right combination of tide / wind / will start it chafing. Or you'll have sleepless nights worrying that it is going to happen.

My boat has the bobstay held by a block and tackle at the bow sprit end and led inboard to a cleat by the sampson post. It's then easy to slacken off when moored. I would think it a straightforward modification to make? Just remember to tighten up before putting up the sails!

Bluemoongaffer's method is the generally accepted way. Makes the boat look quite elegant with the bobstay triced up out of the way, while at anchor.

But don't try it with a sloop rig - your mast might fall over!

Get yerself a tricable bobstay - takes seconds to set and slacken, so eases all the worry. A caveat - make sure your main forestay attaches to the bow plate/roller and not the end of the sprit, or you'll have an unsupported mast!
