Hi- I'll try again as I suspect my last thread was a little too specific- We are looking for a good boatyard in which to work on our steel boat in Turkey. Boat is currently in Kemer which is eastern end of Turkey so we were hoping to find somewhere in that area but would appreciate any info at all.

We've taken a contract in the new marina at Kas for this winter. We'll be on the hard there and are told we can work on our steel ketch there ourselves. There will be (they say) services available on site by the end of summer. Outside contractors around 20 euro per person per day (much the same as elsewhere in Turkey). Rates are good as this is their first year and eager for customers. Marina looking good too ... but only time will tell! Kas looks a great little town but with fewer services than places like Marmaris.

Nice and close to you. Why not go and see for yourself? Several of the staff have been transferred in from Finike which seems to have a good reputation.

Let me know if you want pictures or more information.

Extensive Refits

Tuncay and Umit were both from Finike Marina. Umit is a real goto guy to get stuff sorted and speaks many languages fluently. The Technical Services manager from Kemer Marina is going to Kas last time I spoke with them. I am moving my boat there also this year as I think Kas is a great place.

My concern with all Turkish Marinas is using external labour. In theory you can hire external labour (I mean day labour) but the local marfia seems to move in and the hired workers decide not to turn up for work in fear of their life. Just my experience with Finike and I will bet Kas will be the same in short order.

Looking at the new lifts they are going to use (they have one sling lift and one articulated) in Kas I suspect there will be little space between boats. Finike only use a sling lift and this leaves lots of space around your boat for the lift frame and for your boat work. I have rebuilt a boat in Finike and would choose that as the place to do extensive work. Work space will limited in Kas I fear.

Have you thought of Alanya, just across the bay - good yard space, an excellent steel worker if you needed any advice/assistance, and a very good sanayi in town.

Satsuma- we were not overly impressed with Kemers technical team, facilities or prices
pmyatt- thanks very much for the information- we will check it out
