Following Philliz's thread & to avoid confusing those who use Apple rubbish, how about advertising your fave Google Android apps on here? mark 'em free or paid for please. Thanks

I'll start with Google lattitude. If you have a gmail account your location can be marked on Google earth for designated friends to see. Might help the Straits Gang to keep in touch on the water.

EasyTether: gives your phones web connection to your laptop via USB cable. Free
Marine Traffic: AIS reader, pointless? but fascinating Google Maps overlay. Free and fun
Google Sky Map: does what it says on the tin. Free and useful for stargazing
There are many compass apps. Free
Bubble: do you have a list? Its a small spirit level. Free

Navionics uk, whole of uk charts, offline navigation, grib forecast. 20 quid.

Marine weather by blufin, UK version. Met office shipping and inshore forecasts, long range outlook, buoys, weather stations, tides.

Unofficial magic seaweed app. Faster to get data than official app !

I'm sure there's more...

This app
http://www.appbrain.com/app/mm-tracker/com.meixi

Its an app that does nearly everything that Memory Map does.
Memory Map runs on the PC, Windows Mobile and iPhone.
This app runs on the Android but reads the Memory Map data (charts etc)

Really works well.
Still new features being added.
Availble without charts from the Android Market at £5.59
It reads all my Memory Map raster charts.
Like all phone apps it would be difficult to use it as your main system but is an excellent backup.
From my point of view it uses all my charts - even the ones I've scanned myself.
Great to have in the bar when you are discussing your next trip - or show your tracks from the last trip.

Excellent value for money.

Note - it doesnt work with the charts supplied with the cheap £30/£40 Memory Map package but does work with all the QCT version 2 format ones.

If anyone is interested, I'll write up a separate report - with pics etc.

There's a couple of anchor watch apps - including one that's quite expensive, around £10. Does anyone know if that expensive one is worth the extra money?

Not imho, In the old days when you had a decent amount of time to download to try apps then uninstall for a full refund I had a look at it. There are some nice features but not worth that sort on money. I'd want a lot for that sort of dosh.

You can use an android app from Sportstracklive.com (£5-99) to upload tracks to view on google earth including live display visible from any PC or record for later playback showing detailed speed data over the ground.Or you can use a GPS to record a track (voyage) and upload this for free.It can be amusing to see where you ran aground or how many times you milled about waiting for the the Kingsferry to open.

The record is permanent and forms a log. Here's an example from an etrex:

( yes,indirect interest declared)

I thought I read somewhere that this Navionics version doesnt have the "pinch zoom" facility.

Does anyone know if this is true?

Correct. zooming is via + and - buttons. It doesn't look as polished as the iphone version imho but I still like it.

The vertical-only aspect may be fine for east and west coast sailors, but personally I'd quite like it if you could rotate the display 90 degrees

Thanks for that

MM Tracker is slightly better at the moment - still no pinch to zoom but they are planning it for an upgrade. MM Tracker's orientation can be either portrait or landscape or auto so has the edge at the moment.

But I expect the Navionice will be a better option in the future as it gets developed.

Personally, I'm set up with raster charts and Memory Map so MM Tracker is more suitable for me - all my PC stuff is raster based and my ship systems are Navionics - routes and waypoints are reflected in both and on the MM Tracker software.
