Boatshow madness - Attention BMF and YBW editors!!

I am now convinced that Excel could work but not at this time of year. I would not be suprised if visitor numbers this year dropped below 100K.

If the London show was in Excel but in April or September full use could be made of the dock and a huge waterside marina attraction built that would rival La Rochelle or Barcelona shows. You would be able to have a vast indoor show with also vast marina based exhibits. Having a dockkside location in January in London is bonkers and overlooks the real potential strength of the location.

Needs brave thinking though as - what do you do about Southampton?

There were no last minute discounts or deals available for stand space as far as we were concerned for 12m² ...we tried.

[/ QUOTE ]

Funny, 'we' and wont say who here as it seems unfair as we really had little interest in going, were being chased hard after the closure date for exhibitors to sign up with the offer of free stand space. Think the freebies floor space was definitely there and on offer depending on if said product was what they thought they wanted on show.

Southampton would do for me too, but falls in September, when I am away sailing. Excel at least gives me the opportunity to browse and buy chandlery.

I went to Earls Court on Sunday, and thought it a very poor show. Hardly any manufacturers there, which was no surprise given the direct clash of dates with the Paris Salon Nautique. What genius decided the EC dates I don't know, but he pretty well guaranteed that most of the manufacturers of equipment would not attend.

With any luck I will get to Paris on Thursday.

Notice Sweeden appears to manage 4 shows.

Why is it we cannot be positive in this country, we only seem capable of why we should not do, but never why we should do.

Brian

Four shows maybe, but I believe something like 25% of population in Sweden are active private boat owners accounting for well in excess of 700,000 privately own recreational craft.

So maybe four shows works for them.

There you have it, a negative vibe.

700,000 is less than 2% of the UK population, how many MOBO's, raggies, surfers, etc are there in this country ?

If they can, why can't we?

Brian

It seems to me, that there might be a different approach to boatshows, depending if it is the public or the exhibitors. The exhibitors display their goods to sell them. In this respect it makes a lot of difference if you want to sell a boat worth 500k or an anchor of 0.2k. I am always amazed at people buying a 500k ship at an exhibition. If you plan to spend that kind of money I guess you have been looking at different boats and have already made your choise. Maybe it is convenient to buy at the boatshow, but buying at the sellers-office is almost the same. For the exhibitors of this kind of ship 99% of the public is just a pain in the behind, because they come to look and not to buy and just take up the time of the sales-people.
The story is different for the chandlers and the exhibitors of equipment. People go to the boatshows to look at the different articles and compare their qualities. Forums such as this make it possible to decrease the choice to three of four and then it makes sense to visit the show, because you can see all the samples in a short time, discuss, if necessary, its virtues with the sellers and buy, what seems the best for you. I have often visited the boatshow with a list of the equipment I wanted to buy and the chandlers where to buy them. Iow I never went just to look, but always to really shop for specific goods, although I did not always buy at the show, because the object was difficult to transport on a plane, but knew where to buy it afterwards or even having it send to me, because it was not available at the show.

I'm told that the organisers would love to have the London show in say April for all the obvious reasons, but the only feasible venue is Excel and the place is booked solid all year long.

[/ QUOTE ]

No not negative, realistic.... Read it again, 25% of their population, so like I say maybe it works for them.

No issues with bringing on an alternative to the main stay shows, but there are just that, the main stay. That is not to say things couldn't be different, things could be tweaked or things could change dramatically.

What I was endeavouring to illustrate is, is there the interest, timing, capacity and ability to hold another show?

Funboy

what relevance have all these dates to our lives. We have 3 show of our own, why would we need all these other shows.

Unless that is you are a show spotter!

My point is that by making Earls Court clash with Paris they chose to clash with one of the biggest shows, and barring the other UK shows, also the closest one. A clash with a show in the USA would not have mattered at all, as the big manufacturers have sales teams in both continents. I doubt the clash with Istanbul had any real effect and could have been avoided by moving Earls Court forward a few days, but Paris?

Oi sloppyshed or whatever ya name is... Might not be relevant to you, but think outside of the box for a moment, you don’t think every exhibitor exhibits solely at the UK shows do you!?!?

Firms need their people back in the office at some point during the year, you know to keep the business going.

Fun kid

My point is your geeky boat show spotter list of shows features shows that are thousands of miles away and have no relevance to this discussion.

With regards to the more local shows the big boys could be at london and paris if they wanted to be. NBS is I belive is run by representatives from many of the industry big players- I think we can all do the maths.

sloppyshed, have you the first idea… No perhaps you don’t, believe me the cost of exhibiting at the shows, even if it were only SBS & LBS, is vast. Vast logistically, not least financially.

In addition to SBS & LBS add in another 3 or 4 UK based shows and 2 or 3 international shows which may see you simply ‘only’ supplying stock/displays, manning or full blown stand building. Its an expensive calendar at just that.

Which is why there is little monies & time left in most pots to support yet another London show. <FULLY RELEVANT

As you put it “the big boys could be at London and Paris if the wanted” some are, some will continue to do so. But read the underlined in the first paragraph!

Which is why you tried topping up your pot by selling your free tickets to EC on the forum in a non commercial for sale list

As far as I understand every exhibitor was given 100 plus of these tickets free to pass on to their customers for free.

You still have not explained the relevence of listing shows that are on different continents. I dont understand why they effect exhibitors here.

I originally put his as a reply to JJ's post but this seems a more appropriate place. From my perspective the prices haveforced out the intersesting stands - the variety seems to gone, even from Southampton to a degree. The only boats we see at the show are the ones that we see out and about every weekend anyway. It's a bit like going to a Motor Show where the highlight is the BMW M3 and everything else is a Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, Golf, etc.

I agree - the big problem in the UK is the cost of the show to exhibitors, which gets passed on to the customer. It's okay paying £10+ for tyre-kicking loads of boats we're not going to buy but, if we want cheap boaty stuff, surely we should be trying to get Beaulieu back to what it was and then making it bigger? It's noticeable that the traders there that aren't cheap are the ones that also do the shows. We should be looking for places where the likes of Malthouse, etc. are willing to make the effort because the cost is low and they'll get the volume of business to make it worth their while. Neither Earls Court, Excel nor the NEC will ever offer that.

Also what about Beale Park boat show? Most of the exhibitors there wouldn't even ask about the boat show (probably wipe out their profits for the next five years) yet the craft are beautiful and it's a great day out for the family (okay the weather in Summer helps).

A huge field outside the Southampton area with a shuttle bus feeding it could allow those exhibitors who don't want and can't afford it to pay the show prices a chance to have a stall/space at a sensible price. I know the BMIF won't like it one bit but I think the whole thing could be complimentary. We already get quite a few French, Belgian and Dutch coming over to both Beaulieu and Southampton. Combining the two types of show (as long as you get GENUINE bargains) plus attracting the smaller highly skilled yards from around the UK could make a whole load of people think of making it a couple of days worth doing.
