Will everyone going to look on boats at the show mention to the sales guys what a lovely design and how you realize there has to be a compromise but safe seating is a necessity.

I didnt manage to find a single boat that had suitable forward facing sheltered seating for the number of berths.

We all know the results, SWMBOS will agree to buy these boats, take them out in the solent once or twice and they will have less than 30 hours on the clock in 5 years time when they are sold on to the next unsuspecting mug.

I politely mentioned to salesman that his 5 berth boat only had 2 forward facing seats and his reply, well its all about compromise and you have your full standing room in the aft cabin...........and to be honest I helped bring the boat from xxxxxxxxxx and there isnt really room for two of us on the double helm seat.

If everyone one on here mentions this as a concern perhaps the designers will do something about it.

I now understand why I keep reading complaints about the British summer and being storm bound, it isnt the weather , you have bought a show pup !

DEKA - not sure about this . Take say the Princess 42. (4 berth boat with 2 heads)

On the F/B there is a double helm - and space for 2 facing the front on the U shaped seating around the table.

Down below ditto double helm seat and space on both seating areas in the saloon for two people to sit frontwise, or indeed use the cockpit seat with side covers fitted if protection needed.

I must be missing something. Why is there a necessity for the same number of forward facing seats as there are berths?

We have four berths, a two man lower helm (if we're going to insist on fully sheltered seating) and the aft side of the sofa seats another one facing forward. So it must be unsafe, I guess. The other crew have to sit facing sideways (or, the horror! backwards) on the (U-shaped) sofa. Is this to ensure crew safety in the event of a frontal impact? Cos if it is, I'd like to point out we have no seat belts or airbags, and the boat has actually been known to move around in all sorts of random directions when in a big sea.

Agreed the P42 was one of the better ones but I didnt really want to turn this into a thread of 'Princess are better than sealines' , even the princess L seating didnt have any grab rails, crew could struggle across to cowes maybe in a F4 but wouldnt make it to France .

Alright criticism accepted, perhaps my post wasnt detailed enough, there have been times when I would have loved a set of sprung jockey seats :D

On the flybridge boats I noticed wrap round seating at the front just behind the W/S , just where 2-3 crerw seats should be, they could be changeable back rests (I think some F37 have these ???)

Now on the semi enclosed sports boats there were sun loungers under the front w/s :confused:
Compromise just gone too far ( in my opinion :) )

Aha! So the F37 has a double helm seat upstairs and a wrap-round seat next to it to starboard. Behind the helm seat is a big sunpad that extends over the flybridge overhang, but two sections of it hinge up to give another two forward facing seats upstairs. No seat belts, though... ;(

I cant believe I am the only one that has this trouble with crew

"I want to sit at the front,"

"No you will have to wait your turn, you sit at the back facing sideways."

"But the back rest is too small, its more like a waist rest !"

"Oh be quiet , you were at the front as we came out the harbour."

"I m going to be sea sick facing sideways, and I'll be sick all over the front seats"

It goes on for ages until they let me drive again ;)

Oh, you poor things, but that's the problem with MoBo's; there is the guy driving (if not on autopilot, plus a load of passengers. You might as well go by ferry, it's cheaper, more comfortable & you can take your car.

You could always switch to a yacht where side facing seating is the norm. With a little heel, the downhill side is quite comfy for passengers & the uphill side offers better views & active participation in the sailing of the boat for those who prefer it. :D

My passengers like to sunbathe on the foredeck or sit on the downhill side deck & dangle their feet in the water. Or they curl up with a book on the downhill side of the cockpit under the sprayhood if the weather is poor. Even the grandkids (twins that fight all the time) don't fight for a particular favoured seat.

Having sailed, I can say with some confidence that no-one fights because there is simply nowhere comfortable to sit anyway... ;-)

Its not just seating, many modern boats are extremely dodgy when going to the bow to moor or anchor etc. There are few usable handrails and the side decks have high angled cambers.

these mobos sound dangerous ... no wonder they spend most of their time in a marina...
fireball, some of them are!
I,m with DAKA on this one.
nedmin too.
DAKA I,ve just read the new Corvette 34 report in MBM
Sounds very much like the vessel you delivered;)

I look at some sports boats and cringe at the thought of the peeps that have to go forward on them
Even some up to 30 odd ft.

It's all fine and dandy when conditions are flat as a pancacke
Couple of people facing forward an tother milling about or chatting face to face etc.
How often do we see flat calm around the UK waters though?

OK the salesman has a point about compromise fair enough.

A 5 berther imho should have at least four forward facing seats at least upstairs and downstairs.
Crikey even me little 27 Nimbus has 5!

I come across lots of Newbies.
'Oh that looks smart, ooh that looks nice' etc etc

'Yes it does' says I
But what if you want to deploy your anchor or go forward for a picnic or sunbathe (ha 'sunbathe ' in North Wales') how yer gonna get there and what yer gonna hold on to plus how yer gonna see what's coming instead of what yer just passed'

'Oh yeh, never thought of that' is the normal reply.
Which is natural cos you wouldn,t would you , I know I didn,t till I,d had a couple of boats.

This where the compromise comes in.
People do like to socialise on Mobos so the Cocktail area has to' look' good.

Searush, it don't matter on Yoghuorts, yer too busy friggin in the riggen and splicin yer gimble frawcetts and working out tidal flows an trippen over lazy lines and other bits of string an -- an --- etc etc
Plus, how the H der drink yer cocktails at 45 degrees:D

hi Kawasaki,

I didnt mean to mislead, I wasnt the delivery skipper, (I wish my job was a fraction as interesting as that !)
I was quoting the salesman who had delivered the boat and he was incredibly honest in pointing out to me that the situation was worse than I thought, there were not even two usable forward facing seats on a 5 berth boat.

I really dont want to give the name of the boat here (pm sent) for two reasons

he was incredibly honest and credit due to him.

and it doesnt seam to bother many , they are just bought to pose in a marina , dream about a 2 week family holiday, get as far as Hurst point, get bounced off the 'seats' turn round, get 'storm bound' in yarmouth, run out of battery power/ water, fall out as the family try to survive for 6 days in a velour coffin and sell up.............

Just for the sake of a few decent seats and grab rails.

Fair play
Fair Play to the Salesman too that's refreshing.

I know it doesn't seem to bother many
But many may bother more to go further than Hurst point if they could, in a bit more comfort if they bothered to think about it.

'Am I boffered':D

The video just says it all for me, they are trying to sell a dream, it seams to last for ever and you only get a very brief glimpse of the boat, is it just me that wants to be able to look at a boat on a sales advert and expect to see the layout in and out, sure a bit of totty adds interest but that video is a joke verging on soft porn as he fondles the bird and the boat.........
