I'd say that midges are not a problem. Ordinary mosquitoes give the most grief.
If you are on a boat or in marinas, it's not a problem. If you spend time on a cottage or in the forest, keep repellent at hand, especially in the evenings. If there isn't any available, you can also try drinking yourself legless. They say that the smell of alcohol keeps mosquitoes away (or at least you don't notice them anymore /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)
Great report, we got back from Finland a month ago, went out for my brothers wedding and decided to have a bit of a holiday at the same time! Fantastic place and I'd love to explore by boat!!
When/if he moves out there we're looking forward to lots more time out there.. so may take you up on the drink
Unless you own an ice breaker you don't. Ice on Lake Saimaa is typically 70-80 cm thick. However some coastal areas freeze very late, so you can continue sometimes until december.
I haven't heard of anyone boating through the winter. Where did you get this impression?
I do most of my diving around Jyväskylä. Waters here are very dark and it's more about the adventure into the darkness rather that seeing a lot /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Saimaa has some very good places with clear waters. Scenery is mostly steep walls and formations left from the ice age. Interesting in itself, but not exactly the Red Sea... If you plan to do diving here, let me know and I'll tell you some good places.
