Hi All,

I'm flying out to Gib with the kids for New year to have a look see.
I haven't be able to book an annual mooring place yet, but they are meant to be building 4 new berths for completion very soon; so I may get lucky.

La Linea is less than half the price for my 8mtr Cat and I was just wondering if most of the boats there are British owned, and do people walk across to Gib to do their shopping every day?

Is there a English speaking community in La linea or is it more Spanish orientated, and is it as good be based there as inside Gib?

thanks,
Peter.

Hiya. I live in Marina bay but use Alcaidesa marina quite a lot.

There are some full time people on board over there, some Brits.marina has a bar, rest of shopping and bars are a fair walk. Good for prices though and for a quiet life.

I prefer the hustle and bustle of MB though.

Hi,

i like the hustle and bustle too; nothing worse than being in a dead place with the brushwood blowing up the street!
I was hoping to spend some time in Gib, maybe a year or two, so I was hoping to join the local Gib sea angling club, r/c aeroplanes, archery club etc etc........

...If I was based at la Linea could I still be part of the Gib community?

Certainly! If I've got a boat out of the water in La L boatyard, the walk takes me about 25 minutes from Marina Bay.

Over six thousand people cross the border every day to work in Gib. The non Spanish part of this workforce see its cheaper to live in Spain and commute.

Lots of anglers in Gib, not too sure about the other things though.

I have have lived for short periods in France, and found that although I can speak basic 'shopping' French it was very hard to become part of the local French community. I did get to know lots of French people, and was invited to several French homes for dinner, but there was always the language barrier in the way.

So my plan was to retire to an English speaking community where the locals spoke English, but not as an expats community living in a foreign country.

Gib seems perfect!

Hoping to fish for big Tuna.........( I've been watching Britain in the sun on channel 5!)

To find winter sun, you really need to go further south than the Med. Gib can be relatively cold, wet and occasionally stormy. Best of the weather tends to be April to November. This December has been mild but it's not sunshine all the way.

Ive been keeping an eye on the weather, and have a look on the ocean village webcam.

My daughter was teaching in Valencia last year, so I was out there for Christmas. It was about 15 deg or better, couple of days rain a week with two or three days of sunshine: bliss in comparison to UK weather.

i don't like the weather too hot; sunny and 15 deg suits me fine.

Just a thought, but if you 'lived' in La Linea, would you not run into all the Spanish residency and boat registration that comes up so often here?

Thats an interesting question.

i notice that the gibraltar test of residency is based on how many 'days' you spend in a Gib; it specifically states it is not based on owning or residing in accommodation inside the juristriction. I'm just guessing this is so that they can deduct tax from the Spanish migrant day workers?

Gib has a double taxation law, if you've already paid tax anywhere in the world you don't have to pay it a second time; but the question is does Spain have a separate tax treaty with a Gib?

could you be theoretically taxed in Gib because you spend 'days' there, and in Spain because you sleep on your boat in La Linea?

Try this to see the border queues, live video, http://frontierqueue.gi

Having a car in a Gib seems to be more hassle than it's worth with all the border queues.

Gib has a very interesting history.
Here's Nelsons body being brought to The Rock...

There seems to be a bit of confusion about this painting; but it's presumed to illustrate the capture in 1704.

This engraving looks more like a likely candidate.

Have a look at http://www.michaelbriant.com/boat_import.htm ... The Spanish 'Guardia' are computerized and after a while will probably catch you out... It is not so much the time you spend in La Linea as the time you spend in any Spanish/EU marina. Every 'entry' form into a marina is returned to the Spanish Duane and entered into the computer system so they can and do track you.

Gibraltar has always and I think still is very laid back about liveaboards. If you leave Gib waters for a short while you do not 'clear' but when you return you 'clear in' and the clock starts again... The price difference for boats over 10mtrs is minimal between Gib and La Linea. Gib is a really fun place to be - La Linea although improving all the time is pretty dull by comparison IMHO
