I often take friends sailing. The same question always pops up: isn't boating terribly expensive ?
My sister has a caravan. Here's what she has to deal with:
Price of caravan: 3.650€, 1988 CHATEAU CANTARA , 9m
Price of boat: 15.000€ 1971 Sirocco 31
Insurance of Caravan: 215€
Insurance of boat: 260€
Overnight in Camping Jamboree (3 pers): 4€pp+12.30€ for caravan+1.50€/shower=28€80
Overnight in Blankenberge Marina=12€+3 showers= 15€
Same goes for long term contracts.
OK; so the actual boat is more expensive, but I lose little if I sell it again. Maintenance seems to be the main differentiator.
But in the end, in bird pulling power, the boat beats the caravan any time
